GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director or designee, the Mechanical Maintenance Technician Assistant works in the maintenance repair and alteration of all equipment assigned to this section.  Specific duties include installing, repairing, and replacing insulation, motors, belts, bearing and other components of the assigned systems.  Participates in the PM routine and recommends changes in the maintenance procedures/methods.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repack valves, repair steam traps, replace defective fittings on steam, hot water and air systems
  • Replace belts and lines up sheaves on belt-driven equipment.
  • Assist in removing and replacing drive motors, fans, pumps and other components of assigned systems.
  • Install pipe covering and other forms of insulation of HVAC cabinets, ducts, and other components of systems that require insulation.
  • Repair moveable steel/plastic carts, mechanical portions of large door operators, and doors.
  • Maintain and repair equipment from manufacturers instructions/brochures.
  • While in the performance of routine duties may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification, where the work or task does not require a specific license. 
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Trade school diploma or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of experience working as a maintenance technician
  • Ability to use hand and shop tools used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and understand sketches and manufacturers instructions.
  • Ability to communicate with skilled and unskilled personnel to accomplish a task or solve a problem.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock; may work in confined spaces on ladders. Ability to perform physically arduous tasks; normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas
