GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Manager of Education and Clinical Services, the Education and Clinical Services Librarian plays a central role in developing customized library services in support of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School research, education, and clinical enterprise. The position collaborates with faculty, graduate students, academic units, and research center personnel to provide customized library services.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Library Education:

  • Provide curriculum support for students and faculty in the T. H. Chan School of Medicine and the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing
  • Collaborate in teaching, learning, research and curriculum support within the campus community as a trusted partner to provide faculty, students, residents, and staff with customized library services
  • Create and manage quality learning experiences for student, faculty, residents, and staff to assist in best-practice usage of information resources to support learning and patient care
  • Design and implement specific projects or programs that cater to the information needs of a community, such as the creation of LibGuides or subject portals
  • Provide virtual and in-person research assistance
  • Build and manage short and long-term relationships with faculty, students, residents, and staff regarding library services and resources
  • Participate in collection development activities to support user needs
  • Serve as a content expert on long-term projects such as systematic reviews and other evidence syntheses

 

Clinical Services:

  • Build partnerships with academic clinical departments and user communities, working with them as a conduit for their information needs, both user- and library- initiated. Services mayinclude advanced literature searching, , reference, and instruction of library research and resources
  • Provide on-demand and on-site information services to the clinical system, such as participation in chart rounds and morning report
  • Support information access at inpatient and outpatient sites across the clinical network
  • Provide access to and training on evidence-based resources to support clinical decision making.

 

Overall:

  • Serve as a leader and/or active member of library teams, task forces and committees
  • Represents the library on university committees, task forces, and working groups
  • Participate in and represent the Library in local, regional, and national professional activities
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent
  • 2 years combined library, teaching, information technology, informatics, and/or biomedical research experience. New LIS graduates and early career librarians with relevant educational and work experiences may be considered.
  • Knowledge of discovery and access tools and databases currently used in libraries
  • Ability to prioritize tasks as necessary in response to the needs of patrons and colleagues
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and easily adapt to new technology and hybrid work environments

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a clinical health care environment or knowledge of medical information resources
  • Experience in curriculum development and instruction / delivery
  • Experience with LibGuides or other resource creation software

COMPETENCIES:

  • Understanding of the parent organization's (academic medical center, hospital, government, corporate, etc.) major policy and program sources.
  • Understanding of the health sciences professions.
  • Understanding of the clinical care, research, medical education, cultural, ethical, economic, and legal issues and environments.
  • Understanding of various health and health-related organizations.
  • Understanding of the institution's mission and planning processes and the role of the library in the institution.
  • Understand the information needs of health practitioners, researchers, administrators, educators, students, patients, consumers, and the general public.
  • Understand the institution's information policies.
  • Understand methods of information delivery and access including consideration of the specific information needs of diverse populations.
  • Understand information services management.
  • Knowledge of acquisition, use, and evaluation of information technologies.
  • Knowledge of technological solutions for permanent access to electronic information.
  • Knowledge of applications in emerging areas of biomedicine computational biology and health information, including electronic health care systems and records.
  • Knowledge of communications and information infrastructure including the Internet and Web.
  • Understand adult learning theory.
  • Understand educational needs assessment, analysis, and evaluation.
  • Understand instructional methodologies, technologies, and systems design.
  • Knowledge of principles of evidence-based practice to support decision making.
  • Knowledge of conducting research and reporting and disseminating research findings either individually or in interdisciplinary research teams.

At UMass Chan Medical School, final base salary offers are determined based on a combination of factors, including your skills, education, and relevant experience. We also consider internal equity to ensure fair and consistent compensation across our teams.

Please note that the range provided reflects the full base salary range for this position. Offers are typically made within the midrange to allow for future growth and development within the role.

In addition to base pay, UMass Chan offers a comprehensive Total Rewards package, which includes paid time off, medical, dental, and vision coverage, and participation in a 401(a)-retirement plan, with the option to contribute to a voluntary 403(b) plan.
