GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Director, Foundation Relations or designee, the Associate Director, Foundation Relations is responsible for obtaining funding for UMass Chan research and educational activities from institutional funders. This position is responsible for actively seeking new sources of foundation funding with a special emphasis on science, medicine and public health; assisting in the stewardship of existing foundation donors so that current funding is continued and the potential for future funding is maintained; and serving as a conduit and resource for all within our academic and research enterprise seeking private foundation and similar funding.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop strategy and prepare proposals for a portfolio of foundations in consultation with faculty, with emphasis on those that support science, medicine and public health. Help develop projects with research and clinical faculty by matching them with foundation funding interests or RFPs and help guide or drive the proposal preparation. Process and work to ensure that all potential foundation funding opportunities are explored
  • Work with the Director, Foundation Relations to develop foundation funding strategies reflecting institutional priorities and programs
  • Develop and maintain relationships with private foundations and community members on all levels that fund educational and research projects at UMass Chan – including coordinating site visits and meetings
  • Work with Advancement Office resources to steward foundation donors including preparing acknowledgement letters, insuring that reporting or other deadlines are met (and preparing reports when needed) and developing and implementing recognition strategies
  • Work with the Communications Office and Advancement Office to enhance existing formal communications efforts to provide information about UMass Chan Medical School to institutional funding sources on a regular basis
  • Establish and maintain a calendar of potential funding opportunities from private foundations to be distributed widely, including division chiefs, department heads and others so that appropriate candidates from UMass Chan can be identified, contacted and worked with to develop proposals
  • Develop guidelines to assess the merits of any potential funding request in light of foundation requirements, institutional funding priorities, or best and highest use of a particular foundation given other potential proposals
  • Serve as a liaison, along with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement, Executive Director and the Director of Foundation Relations, with the Offices of Research Funding and Technology Management to ensure that potential grant seekers are identified, provided with information as to foundation requirements and given the technical assistance needed to develop, complete and submit their proposals
  • Ensure that all foundation and related prospects are properly coded in the CRM system and that contact, stewardship and proposal information is input in a timely fashion for foundations and other institutional donors to ensure pipelines and financial forecasting tools are accurate
  • Provide foundation specific content for any communications vehicles used to highlight funding opportunities and other foundation news to internal and external audiences
  • Participate in staff development by identifying and organizing educational opportunities to enable colleagues to better appreciate the foundation funding landscape
  • Perform other duties as required

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS with an advance degree in the Biomedical Sciences preferred
  • 5-7 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, preferably in government, corporate or foundation arenas within higher education
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations
  • Demonstrated organizational ability, task orientation, proactiveness, and timeliness
  • Proven ability to create and nurture productive, collaborative working partnerships internally and externally
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a high functioning, results oriented team.
