POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the director or designee, the Animal Operations Coordinator will direct all work order and project management in the animal research facilities. The position is considered essential, and as such requires weekend, holiday and off hours coverage as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Modify and develop animal care policies, procedures and practices which promote high quality, cost effective operation of the animal facilities
- Develop and implement a work order tracking program to ensure physical plant deficiencies are corrected within a reasonable timeframe
- Coordinate a preventative maintenance program for all vivarium equipment
- Oversee pest monitoring and control program
- Ensure all building environmental and equipment monitoring systems are validated
- Manage projects and coordinate with UMMS personnel and external contractors
- Communicate with faculty, staff and other service departments to provide high quality, responsive animal care services; advice on technological changes affecting laboratory animal research and care
- Perform routine rounds of animal facilities
- Provide job performance training and documentation of training for animal care and supervisory staff
- Assist with the development and implementation of an annual budget that accurately reflects the needs of the department
- Manage, select, and maintain resources, inventory of materials or equipment as necessary
- Record accurate documentation necessary for regulatory compliance
- Ensure compliance with all UMMS policies and local, state, and federal laws governing the use of research animals
- Perform husbandry duties
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Trade school graduate, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in operation or management of building and equipment systems. Experience with operation of vivarium equipment preferred
- Demonstrable knowledge of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, ability to read and understand technical sketches and diagrams, knowledge of basic plumbing and electrical terms and concepts
- AALAS certification at the ALAT level within 18 months of hire
- Ability to effectively and efficiently handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks and projects
- Capable of concurrently executing and managing a variety of projects
- Basic computer skills e.g familiar with Microsoft office and related software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Project management certificate or experience
