GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the direction of the Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO), the Director of Research Informatics Operations (DRIO) functions in all phases of research informatics operations, particularly as it pertains to the success of the Research Informatics Core (RIC). This position is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the RIC, including the oversight of the RIC team members rendering services to our UMass research community. Working closely with the Director of Research Informatics System and the CRIO, the DRIO will ensure that operations at the RIC will continue to evolve to include new technologies to support the goals of our researchers. In addition, this position will ensure that the RIC maximizes service efficiency and productivity while remaining fiscally sound.

The DRIO will also provide data services as a member of the RIC team. In that role, the DRIO will analyze researcher needs, software and database design, programming, and life cycle development of all business and applications needed by our researchers. This position will guide and advise other engineers from UMass IT in the design and development of software applications that support the demands of UMMS academic, research, and business needs.  This position may also manage the evaluation and review of 3rd party software and conduct feasibility studies to determine appropriate solutions. The DRIO will communicate well with researchers and leadership through all phases of development and support.

Performs duties consistent with a complex, diverse, dynamic hardware and software environment and serves a complex clinical and basic science research community. This position requires an experienced senior leader with a deep technical understanding of research informatics and new technological trends. Finally, this position requires a dedicated, detail-oriented, organized, independent, responsible, and accountable individual.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Set strategic goals for operational efficiency and increased productivity
  • Work with financial administration in the development of financial and budgetary plans
  • Analyze current operational processes and performance, recommending solutions for improvement when necessary
  • Maximize efficiency and productivity through extensive process analysis and interdepartmental collaboration
  • Collaborate with executive-level management in the development of performance goals and long-term operational plans
  • Develop, implement, and monitor day-to-day operations and processes that provide visibility into goals, progress, and obstacles for our key initiatives
  • Build and maintain relationships with all department heads, external partners, and vendors to make decisions regarding operational activity and strategic goals
  • Plan, monitor, and analyze key metrics for the day-to-day performance of the operations to ensure efficient and timely completion of tasks
  • Devise strategies to ensure the growth of programs enterprise-wide, identifying and implementing process improvements that will maximize output and minimize costs
  • Uphold organization policies and standards.
  • Work closely with human resources to lead the team with integrity and establish and maintain a trusting, inclusive, and productive environment
  • Provides mentoring and knowledge transfer to new and existing data scientists, including providing code reviews, training and developing staff support business process, problem analysis, and consultation.
  • Requires excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and timelines required.
  • Ability to work independently within guidelines and provide technical consulting on complex projects considering equipment capacity, limitations, operating time, and desired results.
  • Experience in formal Quality Review process, including but not limited to instructing, directing, mentoring, and reviewing other team members required.
  • Supervise and direct staff as assigned. Participate in recruiting and staff performance reviews as assigned.
  • Continue developing skills and expertise in emerging technologies by participating in formal training and independent self-teaching and tutorials.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience.  Masters preferred.
  • 10+ years of related experience at an academic institution
  • knowledge of multiple operational functions and principles, including finance, customer service, production, and employee management
  • Proven ability to plan and manage the operational processes for maximum efficiency and productivity
  • Ability to streamline and implement new structures and roles that create speed, efficiency, and support rapidly shifting business demands
  • Strong working knowledge of industry regulations and legislative guidelines
  • One or more of the following application development languages: C, C++, SQL
  • Robust object-oriented analysis, design, and programming skills
  • Rapid Application Development experience
  • Demonstrated experience working Agile/Scrum framework
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work well with people with different levels of information technology expertise.
  • Experience with SQL Server 2008 databases
  • Experience with cloud technologies and services.
  • Experience using modern development processes/tools and developing through the complete Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Experience converting functional requirements into technical requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills are required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with budget and business plan development
  • Proven ability to develop innovative solutions for increased productivity
  • Superior negotiation skills in both internal and external settings
  • Masterful organizational, communication, and leadership skills, demonstrated by previous professional success
  • Strong working knowledge of data analysis and performance metrics using business management software (e.g., SAP, ERP, CRM)
