GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee, the Nurse Supervisor provides nursing care and participates as a member of the mental health treatment team in an intensive adolescent treatment program.  Perform nursing activities in accordance with licensures by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies and procedures of the patient care area.  Assist with the delivery of direct care, including provision for safety and milieu activities.  Take an active role in re-acclimating individuals to the larger community.  Provides trauma informed care and promotes a person-centered, skills-based collaborative philosophy.  The Nurse Supervisor participates in a process of continuous learning and demonstrates openness to evolving philosophies of practice, including restraint and seclusion prevention.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Responsible for coordinating the nursing activities necessary to meet patient and unit needs during assigned shift. Ensure implementation of milieu activities
  • Collaborate with other nurses to determine coverage and define lines of communication and responsibility to assure continuity of care, including keeping the nurse manager informed of nursing workload, changes in individual needs and other issues
  • Recognize the need for and adapt nursing care interventions to the individual’s physical condition, emotional status, and developmental level
  • Relate pertinent information regarding individual progress toward outcomes during shift to shift report and participate in inter-disciplinary in-patient care rounds and treatment team meetings
  • Oversee the primary nurse, ensuring that they evaluate, and/or update individual treatment plans that include nursing diagnosis, individualized crises prevention plans, educational plans, nursing interventions/orders, outcomes, and discharge planning within established time frames for their achievement in conjunction with the treatment team, individuals, and their families. Explain system of care delivery to patient and family and encourage their participation in the treatment plan
  • Orient, schedule, train, evaluate, commend, discipline, and assist in the hiring and termination of nursing staff
  • Assist preceptors in teaching nursing staff defined competencies. May act as a preceptor and serve as a resource and role model to other staff nurses and health care providers
  • Implement witnessing/pre-witnessing strategies, in conjunction with the nursing management team or designee, to assist in the de-escalation of youth in crises
  • Coordinate, delegate, and follow up on all aspects of incident documentation and resolution. Acts as a liaison to the nurse management team and ancillary agencies as needed
  • Conduct complaint reviews and perform fact finding investigations
  • Perform and document comprehensive nursing assessments and interventions
  • Responsible to utilize electronic medical records systems for all documentation
  • Administer, coordinate, and record medications and vaccinations consistent with his/her knowledge of pharmacology and according to Medication Policy and Procedure
  • Coordinate medical appointments, medical procedures, emergencies, and authorize physical management when necessary
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment for individuals and staff and implement infection control guidelines
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant issues of nursing practice, hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care. Participate in quality improvement projects
  • Support a positive public relations image and effectively communicate with patients, visitors, and health team members
  • Provide on-call and on-site coverage
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Currently registered by the Board of Registration in Nursing for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • 1-3 years of nursing experience, at least 1 year of which is  in a preceptor or charge nurse role
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people who are under emotional stress.
  • Ability to work with others collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Must be able to assist with the physical management of individuals in crisis.
  • Ability to perform intermediate computer skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
