POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the direction of the Director or designee, the Biomedical Device Engineer functions in all phases of device innovation, design and development. This position is responsible for the translation of user functional needs in the research and clinical healthcare space into innovative device prototypes and products. The Biomedical Engineer will work with team to support research project in designing and developing next generation of neuromodulation device. They will also assist in the evaluation and research of 3rd party technologies and conduct feasibility studies to determine appropriate solutions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide device programming, design and hardware support to advance research projects
  • Design and assemble mixed signal electronic rapid-prototypes.
  • Work with multidisciplinary team of design and manufacturing engineers to develop and scale next generation neurostimulation systems.
  • Design new magnetic field generators that focus and increase the field strengths and measure the magnetic field at various locations away from the electrode.
  • Capture magnetic signals and convert to imaging signal
  • Continue development of skills and expertise in present and emerging technologies by participating in formal training when possible and by independent self-teaching and tutorials
  • Translate team input into rapid, proof-of-concept prototypes and participate in the design and implementation of devices for collecting and analyzing data in collaboration with domain scientists and other scientific team members
  • Design, develop and perform engineering validation testing and data analysis
  • Ability to work independently within guidelines as well as work collaboratively with research team members to support group projects and accomplish project deliverables and timelines
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics or equivalent with 1-3 years related experience.
  • Experience in Circuit Design, Embedded Systems, Electromagnetics, Electrophysiology, Signal Processing, Closed Loop Control (computational electromagnetics and knowledge about finite element modelling is a plus).
  • Experience with neural stimulation and design/testing of neural interfaces.
  • Experience in magnetic field resonance imaging and image processing.
  • Strong programming skills. MATLAB or Python essential; familiarity with other languages is desirable. C/C++ (and derivatives), LabVIEW, and scripting languages are all of interest. Prior experience with data acquisition hardware and/or creating real-time systems would be helpful.
  • Solid interpersonal skills, with ability to work well with others and comfort in varied organizational relationships.
  • Critical thinker and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics or equivalent
  • Domain knowledge and prior work experience with embedded product development for IoT applications – wearable tech, RFID and NFC applications, medical applications, health and fitness applications will be preferred
  • Strong interest in Life Sciences and Healthcare fields including research data.
  • Fast learner, self-starter and out-of-the box thinker who can help solve tricky problems in device engineering
  • Familiarity with firmware design and development for embedded real time systems
  • Documented evidence of experience in:
  • Rapid Prototype Development
  • Cloud technologies and services
  • Strong understanding and applied use of CAD and/or circuit design software
  • Arduino and/or Raspberry Pi kits
