We are seeking a highly motivated IT Data Science Intern who will extract data and build a dictionary of all molecular diagnostic and genetic tests carried out at UMass Memorial. The intern will use cancer as a proof of concept. The project will make patient records easier to search by specific genetic and molecular diagnostic testing information.

Responsibilities:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Utilize innovative ideas and approaches to assist in the development of working models to serve the needs of our faculty, students and researchers
  • Complete a project from start to finish and write-up and present the work product to the UMass community
  • Participate in team projects
  • Conduct online research
  • Perform other duties as required
Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Must be a currently enrolled student in a higher education institution or recent graduate
  • Solid analytical and communication skills
  • Attention to detail with the ability to collect and record information from a wide variety of sources
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Proven interest in IT and passion in furthering the mission of UMMS
  • Must have above average academic performance

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and background in computer science and biology
  • Strong experience and background in data mining and analysis
  • Scripting/programming experience in Python or R
  • Working experience in bioinformatics or computational biology would be a plus
  • Good communications skills and experience collaborating with seasoned professionals, researchers and clinicians
