GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:  

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Construction, the Facilities Construction Manager is responsible for oversight of construction activities on multiple projects on the Medical School campus and off-site properties. Duties include participation in the design, planning, specifications, construction schedules, estimates, contract documents, inspections, and project closeout for complex renovations, deferred maintenance and new construction projects. Project types are primarily focused on medical education, biomedical science, clinical science and research laboratory facilities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working independently or with the Facilities Project Manager, oversee construction performed by outside contractors for all assigned projects to ensure conformance with construction documents and compliance with campus policies and state and local regulations.
  • Communicate with campus staff affected by construction work. Monitor disruptions caused by work within occupied facilities. Ensure contractor adherence to contract requirements, campus policies and approved logistical plans to minimize disruption to building operations.
  • Coordinate with contractors and Facilities Maintenance personnel to schedule utility system shut-downs and outages.
  • Monitor daily progress of construction projects, inspect and report on quality of work, schedule and conformance to contracts.
  • Maintain a thorough familiarity with project drawings, specifications, schedule, and owners requirements.
  • Ensure project compliance with state and local permitting requirements and facilitate regular site inspections with agencies having jurisdiction. Coordinate and partner with Facilities Maintenance, Environmental Health & Safety, and other campus departments to ensure compliance with campus policies.
  • Participate in development and maintenance of campus construction policies and procedures.
  • Utilize Departments capital projects management software applications to upload project budget and schedule information, request consultant and construction contracts, request purchase orders, and keep track of billable time.
  • Provide construction oversight for work scheduled outside of normal work hours and workdays.
  • As essential personnel, respond as needed during unexpected impacts to facilities or campus operations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10 years of related experience/education/training or Bachelors degree in architecture, engineering, construction management or related field; and 7 years project or construction management experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of building design and construction, engineered systems, construction contract administration, Massachusetts building codes, and standard industry practices.
  • Possess interpersonal skills to effectively communicate, lead, and interact with all levels of Medical School personnel and outside contractors, vendors, and consultants .
  • Ability to work effectively among a diverse campus culture and be responsive to their needs. Excellent communications skills that demonstrate professionalism, courtesy and diplomacy.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems used for project management, budget development, schedule creation, and communication.
  • Valid Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License and 30-Hour OSHA card.
  • Ability to access all areas of the construction site.
  • Ability to work various hours and locations based on project needs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10 years of experience in construction project management
  • Experience working in an academic medical institution, hospital or biomedical laboratory setting
  • Experience with DCAMM and public works in Massachusetts
