GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

 

The University of Massachusetts Medical School is seeking a qualified applicant to become a member of the  leadership team focused on maintaining a safe environment for faculty staff, patients and visitors. The Department maintains a strong community oriented presence with a visible presence in the school and hospital environment completing regular patrols and responding to emergencies and calls for service. In addition, the department maintains a full  time dispatch center with civilian dispatchers responsible for call taking and dispatching of police units.  All Police Officers are sworn under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 75. Section 32A, have the same law enforcement authority as Municipal Police, and are trained at Municipal Police Academies.

 

Responsibilities:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise, direct, and assign all department personnel, including sworn officers and civilians in the performance of their duties
  • Manage the daily functions of the Police Department, including any criminal or security investigations
  • Prepare staffing and security plans for all campus events and acts as the liaison between the Police Department and the University’s senior leadership
  • Insure that all federal, state and local laws or ordinances and UMMS and/or Police Department policies, procedures and practices are adhered to
  • Prepare reports and presentations for both the Director and senior leadership
  • Assist with overseeing Emergency Management program for the medical school and hospital
  • Complete Clery reports as needed and serve as a key member of the Accreditation program for police department.
  • Perform the duties of a police officer or superior officer as needed
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Graduate of the Massachusetts Municipal Police Officer’s Training Academy or able to obtain exemption from Municipal Police training Academy for full time Massachusetts Municipal Academy
  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited four year college or university required
  • 5 years in a police supervisor position, at Sergeant or above
  • Extensive training and experience in criminal investigation and community policing required. Specific experience in policing issues in health care or higher education preferred
  • Administrative experience in planning, budget preparation and forecasts
  • Knowledge of Emergency Management, Clery report and Accreditation process.
  • Working knowledge of computer technology, including MS office software
  • Demonstrated written and verbal skills required to interface with all levels within the University and hospital setting
  • Must hold or be eligible to receive a valid license to carry firearms in Massachusetts and received federal security clearances as required.
  • Must successfully pass written and psychological qualifying examination
  • The positions is subject to successful background review
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary for use of police equipment and completing arrests, restraints. Ability to stand, bend and run during periods of stress
