Research Scientist at UMass Medical School Neuroscience Lab

The Schafer lab focuses on understanding how microglia, resident immune cells of the brain, and immune molecules regulate neural circuits.  We use a variety of techniques such as microscopy, single cell RNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, mouse genetics, and behavior to address how microglia modify synapses and, in turn, how these mechanisms go awry in disease. Our primary disease interests include, but are not limited to, autism, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. You can find more information at https://www.schaferlabumms.com/

We are seeking a long-term commitment from motivated individuals with a desire to manage a laboratory and provide a technical support role. The candidate will provide technical support and collaborate with postdocs and graduate students on scientific projects. Previous experience working in rodent models, histological preparation of tissues, and microscopy are preferred. In addition, they will also be asked to manage the laboratory. This includes ordering, maintaining finances, keeping instruments in working order, and onboarding and training new individuals who enter the lab. Candidates should feel comfortable working with mice (prior experience preferred but not necessary), they should work well in a group, and they should have a strong ability to multi-task.

Interested individuals should reach out to Dr. Dori Schafer at Dorothy.schafer@umassmed.edu.
