GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Manager, UMass Cancer Walk & Community Fundraising, the Advancement Specialist, Cancer Walk and Community Fundraising works with individuals and organizations in the community raising funds to advance the mission of UMass Chan Medical School (UMass Chan). The Advancement Specialist will utilize writing, computer, marketing, and public relations skills in these various assignments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the fundraising activity of community supporters
  • Motivate and facilitate supporters to maximize the funds they raise for UMass Chan
  • Inspire new supporters to raise money for UMass Chan programs, while maintaining and developing relationships with existing supporters
  • Assist fundraisers with set-up and design of fundraising page(s) on online platform(s)
  • Disseminate community event information using internal and external communication tools including website, email and social media
  • Track and report progress of program including number of events, gross and net proceeds, expenses, UMass Chan department beneficiaries, etc.
  • Evaluate success and progress of accomplishing goals and refine business strategy and action steps as needed
  • Work on stewardship opportunities such as acknowledgments, publications, gift items and special event as needed
  • Provide leadership and oversight in the planning, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of fundraising projects and events
  • Assist walk manager in the identification and cultivation of donors as appropriate
  • Solicit and secure gift-in-kind sponsors, including food, water, and survivor gifts for walk event
  • In collaboration with the manager, develop action plans and calendars for projects and tasks, assuring that assigned projects stay on time and on budget
  • Identify and manage volunteers and provide other required support for walk event, event day, and related community events
  • Assist in proposal development as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience
  • Possess a high degree of self-confidence & enthusiasm and ability to engage with all levels of stakeholders
  • Strong oral and written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Works well independently and as member of a team
  • Detail oriented with a high level of follow through
  • Self-starter who needs minimal direct oversight and has strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated skills in creating marketing materials for website, corporate newsletters, events or fundraising campaigns
  • Excellent PC skills with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Volunteer fundraising experience highly desirable
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations
