This is a key communications role that directly supports the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC) of Commonwealth Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School.
The Internal Communications and Employee Engagement Manager role reports to Chief of Staff (CoS) and partners across the organization daily, collaborating with executive leadership, marketing communications, program managers, and cross-functional teams focused on time sensitive and high priority issues. This is an opportunity for a skilled communications professional who can communicate effectively with a diverse and dispersed (remote, hybrid, on-site) workforce and has an aptitude for stakeholder engagement and influencing with change management transformational communications strategies. The manager must have excellent content creation skills and must think strategically and creatively to build strong relationships to lead the implementation, review, and further development of the CWM internal communications and engagement strategy.
This is primarily a remote position, with the need to be on-site for key meetings and events.
About Commonwealth Medicine:
Commonwealth Medicine (CWM) is the consulting and operations division of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan). We have been working with state and federal agencies and other health care organizations since 1983 to help solve health care challenges. The success of that early work led to the establishment of Commonwealth Medicine as a full health care consulting division of UMass Chan in 1999. Our services and capabilities have expanded over the years based on the needs of these clients and the ever-changing health care landscape. Today, we draw on the academic knowledge, research studies, and public health service expertise of our 1,200 CWM and 4,800 UMass Chan colleagues to provide comprehensive, innovative health care and policy solutions.
Our primary focus is to help both public and private health and human service agencies and organizations fulfill their mission by offering a full range of solutions to address strategic, organizational, clinical, financial, operational, and policy challenges. The ideal candidate will exhibit a high level of ownership of day-to-day tasks, projects, and deliverables, including:
Strategic Communications
• Develop and lead integrated internal communications campaigns around strategic priorities, under the direction of the Chief of Staff and in partnership with the Senior Director for Process Improvement and Program Management, Program Director for Diversity and Inclusion, Associate Director for Marketing Communications, and others.
• Capacity to proactively address internal communication issues, needs and opportunities.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a highly intelligent and diverse workforce and communicate in a tone of voice aligned with CWM vision, mission, and core principles.
• Experienced in a wide range of communications – including speeches, 1-pagers, monthly newsletters, town hall meeting forums.
• Able to translate technical information (particularly health care policy and operations) in clear terms to a range of internal audiences and stakeholders.
• Create content for multiple channels to reach employees across the organization - including but not limited to intranet, newsletters, email, and other media
• Support the EVC high profile internal and external events by capturing content.
Executive Communications
• Prepare briefing materials for the EVC’s public/speaking events. Provide support for background and talking points for relevant public engagements.
• Assemble necessary statistics, case details or other materials and information to be fully briefed; Reach out to senior leadership and program managers to collect and organize data for briefings and drafting talking points.
Public Affairs/Advance
• Partner with UMass Chan Media Relations Manager to develop press releases, respond to press inquiries and advise all public events and appearances with the media.
• Support EVC public events by partnering with host organization on logistics, site visits, and communications deliverables.
• Day-of event: support on-the-ground logistics, partner with program staff, Multi-Media Content Producer, and others to capture event.
Responsible for monitoring and responding to public and internal inquiries regarding CWM, including constituent services and intranet inquiries from employees.
Support CWM communications by managing key routines and deliverables including cross-organization communications meetings (develop agenda and content, coordinate meeting logistics and follow up), CWM events and editorial calendars, monthly newsletters, and Town Hall forums.
REQUIRED EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, related fields, or equivalent experience.
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE
5-7 years of experience in the communications field, preferably in a health care or multi-faceted human services setting.
Detail-oriented and highly organized, with strong ability to successfully multi-task and manage priorities
Strong oral and written communication skills
Compelling writer who can draft content concisely, express thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in logical sequence
Capacity to exercise sound judgment and to exercise discretion in handling confidential information
Capacity to prioritize items by urgency and risk and work in a timely manner
Ability to present complex information, including data, to a variety of by utilizing a variety of formats (e.g., written and oral communications, visual presentations, etc.)
Demonstrated ability coordinating the efforts of diverse groups and advancing a culture of inclusion.
High level of self-motivation and accountability, bringing enthusiasm, flexibility, and energy to tasks
Seeks out and is comfortable receiving feedback, particularly edits to written communications, and able to continue to progress the deliverable/project with the benefit of constructive criticism.
Comfortable and productive working at all levels of the organization – can hold his/her own with senior executives, and builds trusting and productive relationships with peers
Interest in health care and human services is required; direct experience in health care and/or human services is preferred.
Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; technically savvy utilizing a variety of website and social media platforms.
A portfolio of writing and presentation samples
PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE
Communications professional in health care and/or human services agencies
Experience in health care consulting, marketing, or public relations agency environment
Experience implementing a successful Internal Communication and Employee Engagement strategy
