GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

The EH&S officer is laboratory safety professional to serve as a Environmental Health & Safety Manager at the Massbiologics Mattapan Research & Manufacturing facilities as well as our Fall River South Coast Manufacturing facility. Reporting to the Director of Facilities Operations, this position will lead chemical safety programs, provide direct support laboratory management, drive site-level EH&S goals and objectives to completion and develop a culture of safety. This position is highly visible and requires proven ability to interact with and influence management at all levels of the organization to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with rapidly changing technologies.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure MBL’s compliance with all necessary standards and regulations issued by federal, state and municipal agencies. Serves as MBL’s facility safety representative both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Provide strong safety leadership and is accountable and responsible for chemical and hazardous materials compliance programs, laboratory safety, and similar HSE programs (e.g., laser safety) and ensuring HSE Management System non-conformances are identified and mitigated.
  • Serve as the EH&S expert in the implementation of EH&S design and procedures for facility renovations and new construction projects.
  • Responsible for ensuring completion of safety regulatory reporting, permit applications and permit maintenance including various wastewater, storm water, air, EPCRA, hazardous waste, etc.
  • Serves as primary interface with MWRA for all water use and wastewater issues.
  • Develop, coordinate, conduct and track EH&S training programs at MBL.
  • Responsible for facility emergency response and planning. Establish emergency evacuation plans and collaborate with the local Fire and Police Departments for routine drills.
  • Investigates and tracks work place injuries and makes recommendations for changes and/or further training for workplace injury prevention. Track MBL incidence rates to industry benchmarks.
  • Develop and implement applicable environmental health and safety policies, procedures and guidelines. Ensure all Material Safety Data Sheets are up to date and accessible.
  • Prepares safety-related records, maintenance of OSHA logs and reports. Communicates safety recommendations and capital requests with regard to cost effectiveness.
  • Provides Senior Management with data analyses and makes recommendations for improvements. Works with Managers and others on environmental health and safety related problems, assisting in the determination and implementation of improvement action(s).
  • Shared responsibility managing site environmental programs by actively coordinating and interacting with the UMASS region Environmental and Sustainability leads. The major environmental management responsibilities of this position include:

    • Water and Air Permitting
    • SARA Right to Know
    • Ozone Depleting Substances
    • Global environment reporting
    • Environmental Risk Assessment
  • Performs additional job duties as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent with at least 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in Laboratory Safety, or Chemical/Biohazard Safety, especially in handling hazardous materials including radiation hazards.
  • Requires working knowledge of state and federal statutes and regulations related to the matters mentioned above, and an ability to interpret the implementation of these requirements into practical applications.
  • Previous experience working in a cGMP manufacturing environment.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Experience with hazardous materials response teams
  • Requires the ability to effectively communicate environmental health and safety rules and procedures through written materials, handbooks, and policies, as well as conduct training.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver safety training sessions.
    Proficient in writing reports and trending data.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in order to interact with all levels of staff in the organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and database applications.
  • Proficient in use of ergonomic monitoring equipment.
  • Analytical skills include evaluating and developing alternatives to address problems and issues.
  • Prioritizes work in order to meet objectives and job responsibilities.
  • Normal manual dexterity and visual acuity
  • Travel to offsite locations required.
  • Provide 24 hour on call support at locations to conduct incident investigations.
  • Ability to become laser safety officer

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or equivalent with at least 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Possess an industry-related professional certification (ASP, CSP, CIH, CHMM)
  • Previous experience interfacing with the MWRA preferred
  • Previous experience in implementing EH&S programs in new facilities preferred
