GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Senior Director, Energy Resources the Director of Energy Resources is responsible for managing the power plant; including operations, maintenance and modernization of equipment for generating steam, chilled water and electricity. Responsible for managing energy budgets for the Medical School properties within Worcester County.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the maintenance, repair and operation of the central utility plant that provides energy resources to the main campus including emergency power for all required safety and operational continuity systems.
  • Responsible for managing power plant operations and energy resources budget totaling more than $25 million.
  • Responsible for oversight of energy expenditures for numerous facility on and off the campus
  • Participate in the development and implementation of department goals.
  • Responsible for managing the contracting and purchase of energy resources for the medical school to provide a constant source of efficient and cost-effective energy.
  • Responsible for managing documentation of utility usage throughout the medical school campus and the associated operational expenses for these utilities.
  • Assist senior management in the preparation of short and long-term capital plans to fund the purchase new or replacement equipment to maintain the power plant at optimum levels.
  • Participate in senior management planning related to energy consumption and cost reduction.
  • Responsible for daily attendance records, shifts, and vacation schedules.
  • Responsible for the development and execution of maintenance and repair programs for all plant equipment.
  • Responsible for overall supervision of Power Plant staff including developing and implementing operational policies, implementation of appropriate staff training, conducting performance reviews and implementing appropriate disciplinary action when required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Equivalent to a Trades’ Apprenticeship Training with ten (10) years operating experience working in large and modern Power Plant.
  • Massachusetts First Stationary Engineer’s License required with ten (10) years experience working as a First Class Stationary Engineer in a modern power plant including five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of utility rate structures and de-regulation of utilities.
  • Communication and organization skills to efficiently correspond with industrial commercial business entities, as well as educational and medical institutions.
  • Knowledge of and experience with union contracts. Ability to communicate and negotiate personnel and university requirements to efficiently and effectively run the utilities facility.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Daily performance and shift assignments of Facilities employees holding Massachusetts Second or Third Class Stationary Engineers License

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock; may work in confined spaces on ladders.
  • Ability to perform physically arduous tasks; normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas
