GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

The Program in Microbiome Dynamics (PMD) at UMass Chan Medical School integrates clinical, experimental, and computational approaches to define the interactions between microbes and their environments, between the microbiome and the health of the host, and the factors that maintain or promote the healthy function of these ecological systems. This vibrant Program currently hosts six tenured/ tenure track faculty and is undergoing a period of growth and recruitment and is projected to grow substantially over the next years.  The PMD aims to be among the leading Microbiome Sciences programs in the country through the pursuit of cutting edge interdisciplinary and collaborative research, and by teaching and training scientists and clinicians in disciplines ranging from genomics, physiology, pathogenesis, computational biology and mathematical modeling, and is rooted in a philosophy of bench-to bedside-and-back to bench. The PMD boasts an open and inclusive culture where trainees, faculty, and staff from all stages in their career are strongly encouraged to participate, so they can reach their full potential. 

The Senior Scientific Writer will work with diverse faculty, staff, postdoctoral associates and students to develop grant and fellowship proposals, presentations, scientific communications and publications.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for developing and submitting a variety of scientific materials for peer reviewed journals, internal and external print and website communications.
  • Plan and prepare major departmental grant initiatives
  • Work with Offices of Faculty Affairs and Research to facilitate faculty and staff virtual networks,  and promote education and career events for department
  • Collaborate with Communications and Development to promote internal and external communications for the department/center.
  • Maintain social media presences for lay audiences
  • Plan and execute Symposiums and other focused events
  • Assist in the identification and development of training materials
  • Edits and proofreads articles, book chapters, grants, abstracts, posters, oral and visual presentations for style and content
  • Prepares figures and illustrations for publications
  • Conducts review of medical literature and summarizes findings
  • Work with the Chair/Director to identify and maintain a cost effective scientific and public communication plan
  • Perform other job duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Master’s degree in a scientific, health care or communications field
  • 5 years of related scientific/ health care communication experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media communications
  • Experience with grant applications and scientific and publication
  • Experience in using computer-based tools (Microsoft Office, Adobe applications, webpage design tools etc)
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, analytical, and interpersonal skills required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD and demonstrated experience with grant writing and scientific manuscripts.

We also consider internal equity to ensure fair and consistent compensation across our teams.

Please note that the range provided reflects the full base salary range for this position. Offers are typically made within the midrange to allow for future growth and development within the role.
