Project description:

MAPK8IP3 is a multifunctional neuronal protein that serves as a hub for signal transduction and promotes microtubule-based vesicular trafficking.  Human mutations in MAPK8IP3 cause a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disease, including axon guidance defects, developmental delay, impaired intellectual development, and poor speech.  Our studies focus on molecular genetics, neurobiology, and structural biology of MAPK8IP3.  We use several experimental models, including iPSC-derived human neurons and genetically modified mice, to study disease pathogenesis.  Our goal is to identify primary defects that can be used to design therapeutic strategies for the treatment of MAPK8IP3 disease.

Environment:

The host labs have a vibrant culture that supports academic research.  Sufficient funding has been obtained to fully support the proposed research.  The Program in Molecular Medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School has outstanding resources for molecular biology using modern research tools and structural biology using CryoEM.
