POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Chief Research Information Officer, the Director of Research Informatics Systems is responsible for: (1) the strategic planning, the technical development, and implementation of institutional I.T.  infrastructure for supporting research operations at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMassMed), and (2) providing direct support to researchers at UMassMed. The applicant's role includes designing, developing, and implementing various technological solutions to enable research operations and continuous process improvement.   This position will work closely with research faculty to better understand their needs and collaborate with UMassMed I.T. to implement those needs into reality. In addition, this role will serve as SME and consultant to the Medical School research faculty and staff.  This position will perform diverse and complex duties consistent with a dynamic and active biomedical education and research community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Management Process

  • Develop goals around research informatics at the Medical School that encourages collaboration between UMMS and UMass Memorial. Socialize and adopt those goals across the various constituents (e.g., UMassMed I.T., research stakeholders, UMass Memorial).                                   
  • Promote collaboration for clinical research between UMMS and UMass Memorial Health System through education and community building.
  • Ensure that the appropriate research tools are available for researchers at UMMS and UMass Memorial.
  • Ensure the research community has the necessary support and technologies to achieve their goals.
  • Lead the evolution, installation, maintenance, configuration, and customization of the research computing infrastructure and facilitate the computational needs of the research community.
  • Develop recommendations for creating a collaborative environment for end-user services, infrastructure access, and the evaluation [for fit] of new technologies/products.

 

Coaching                                                             

  • Facilitate accommodations and solutions for the research community related to I.T. services and infrastructure utilization outside standard School practices.
  • Support the Research Informatics Core governance process for managing the delivery of research-based requests.
  • Develop the model for providing the sustainable support required for quantitative research at a campus-wide level and the ability to support the individual departments in the administration and support of their local environments.
  • Coordinate and support existing informatics cores (e.g., CCTS informatics, imaging informatics, medical informatics, chemical informatics, statistics, etc.).
  • Assist or lead in grant development, research projects, and [identification and acquisition] funding resources.

 

Consulting                                                           

  • Provide consulting to UMass researchers in the utilization of local support environments, high-end software tools for clinical research.
  • Provide technical support for computing practices, debugging/tuning, and software development architectures for clinical research areas.
  • Provide data services to our research community via our UMass Research Informatics Core

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required information systems, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • 7 years of management experience in a large I.T. organization with at least 5 in academic/research I.T. and three years in an Academic Medical Center.
  • Strong experience with relational databases, SQL queries, Stored Procedures, Views, Functions, Triggers in SQL Server
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking abilities and an enterprise-wide perspective, an effective negotiator and consensus builder in an academic setting, and a collaborative leadership style with excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.5+ years of experience in Data warehousing Design and Implementation.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical users.
  • Strong interpersonal and consensus-building skills.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and deal with ambiguity in a dynamic and growing research community.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Able to quickly comprehend new technologies and techniques and apply them in new information system solutions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in developing and supporting research informatics needs at a large healthcare academic center.
  • 10+ Years of experience in production database support and information systems solutions implementation.
  • 10+ experience building and consuming ETL/ELT services (e.g., SSIS, abt, Matillion, Talend, Informatica).
  • Advanced experience with cloud technologies and services like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, along with their respective security levels and what tools the service providers make available through the cloud.
  • Advance experience with B.I. tools (tableau, power BI, Qlik, Alteryx)
  • Advanced skills in C#, MVC Development, WebAPI's, and microservices.
  • Experience with JAVA, Python, Docker and Scala.
  • Familiar with NoSQL databases (e.g., Hadoop, MongoDB) including associated tools such as key-value cache (Ignite, Coherence, Hazelcast), key-value store (Aerospike), Tuple store (Apache River), object database (pREST, ZopeDB), document store (BaseX, Clusterpoint, IBM Domino), wide column store (Amazon DynamoDB, Cassandra), native multi-model database (CosmosDB, MarkLogic), Apache Hive and Apache Spark,
  • Familiarity with Cloud Data Warehouse (Snowflake, Azure Data Warehouse, Redshift).
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning concepts and tools (HDInsight, Python, R).
  • Familiarity with GIS solutions (Esri, Tableau).
  • Familiarity with Epic Systems, especially their Clarity database and Epic Orchard.
  • Familiarity with OMOP model and hospital ADT feeds.
  • Familiarity with interoperability standards/protocols (FHIR, EDI, HL7, DICOM) and tools (Nextgen Connect, Iguana).
  • Familiarity with public and private claims data set (SAFIP/OP, State IP/OP, BHI).
