GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Grants and Contracts Administration the Director, Sponsored Program will plan, direct and administer the Sponsor Program Services for the University Massachusetts Medical School.  Serve as Campus official authorized to sign grant proposals, agreements and contracts including federal and non-federal contracts and awards. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with funding agencies, non-profit foundations, industry sponsors and university constituencies working with senior management to manage initiatives and issues that affect the research portfolio of the Campus. Manage staff activities to ensure compliance of institutional policies, federal and state regulations and sponsor guidelines.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the activities of the Sponsored Program Office staff including hiring, firing, orientation, training, performance management and
  • Serve as the institution’s official authorized to sign grant proposals, agreements and contracts including federal and non-federal contracts and
  • Oversee the negotiation, review, and approval of all grant applications, awards, and industry-sponsored research Ensure documents comply with institution policies, federal regulations, state regulations and sponsor guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with funding agencies, non-profit foundations, industry sponsors and university constituencies.
  • Identify research funding opportunities and trends and disseminates information to appropriate campus faculty and staff.
  • Manage the institution’s grant proposal and award systems; oversee the accuracy of the data used for the generation and distribution of reports to senior management.
  • Serve as an institution resource, in conjunction with Grant Accounting and Compliance, regarding compliance with federal and state regulations and private funding Participate in interpretation and dissemination of changes.
  • Develop, implement and disseminate policies for pre-award activities assuring compliance with University, federal and state regulations as well as conflict of interest
  • Participate in campus meetings with relevant offices such as Administrative and Finance, Development, Office of the General Counsel, Office of Technology Management and Library to assess, direct and develop needed administrative infrastructure to support sponsored programs related
  • Ensure programmatic compliance with negotiated project terms; coordinates and authorizes submission of project
  • Coordinates required approvals from institutional IACUC, IBC, and IRB for
  • Oversee foreign project registration and collaborate with International Support Services on funded foreign projects.
  • Work with staff to prepare and disseminate educational materials on a variety of research administration topics to institution faculty and
  • Represent the University at national meetings on research funding services and participates with peers in university system­ wide meetings to ensure consistency in research policies and effective
  • Advocates for faculty and the institution with Assists department administrators and faculty in appropriate presentation of data to fulfill sponsor requirements while ensuring compliance with university policies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor' s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of demonstrated administrative responsibility in Pre-Award Research Administration or closely related field; with previous management and leadership skills working in a large complex
  • Possesses high-level communication skills, both oral and written including presentations, proposals, reports and memoranda both technical and confidential in
  • Ability to provide information to adverse audience including all levels of the organization.
  • Experience working effectively with multiple constituencies.
  • High level of diplomacy, discretion, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to recommend solutions and/or persuade others toward a course of action usually related to complex problems.
  • Extensive knowledge of policies, procedures, and requirements of federal and private granting agencies, as well as legal, business and academic requirements governing non-profit
  • Capacity to manage complex operational priorities including the development of strategies, which integrate plans and objectives of several programs, services or activities with other departments and/or
  • High level of diplomacy, discretion, and problem-solving skills required.

We also consider internal equity to ensure fair and consistent compensation across our teams.

Please note that the range provided reflects the full base salary range for this position. Offers are typically made within the midrange to allow for future growth and development within the role.
