GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

The UMass Medical School Office of Communications seeks a summer intern who is interested in learning from an experienced team of communications, content creation and marketing professionals and contributing to the office’s work. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about learning how a professional multimedia communications and marketing team fulfills its mission to tell the story of UMass Medical School, primarily by highlighting the achievements of faculty and focusing on health and science topics, and graduate students in the medical, biomedical research and nursing fields. The communications and marketing intern will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of strategic communications team meetings and discussions; shadow professionals engaged in a variety of roles (including writing, multimedia content creation, social media and marketing); gain insight into the goals and responsibilities of a professional communications operation; and create their own content in collaboration with and under the supervision of members of the Office of Communications.

The Office of Communications is a busy, collegial, and collaborative professional environment, with a mission to promote the work and accomplishments of UMass Medical School faculty, students and staff. Please note that due to COVID-19, the 2021 EPSIP will be a completely remote internship experience. Work will be supervised by communications and marketing professionals. 

This internship program will begin Monday June 7th and will end Friday, August 6th. The pay is $16/hour and the position is expected to be full-time over those 9 weeks. This will be a remote internship. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce content for the UMMS news website, UMassMedNow, as well as the institution’s social media channels.
  • Additional work opportunities include gaining insight into admissions marketing and taking photos.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates pursuing bachelor’s degree or recent graduates
  • Related experience preferred
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Ability to use standard office tools and software (MS-Office)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: journalism, marketing, writing, professional social media, graphic design/visual arts, interviewing, website content development or photography/videography.
