The Center for Biomedical Career Development (cBCD) within UMass Medical School’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) supports the career and professional development of ~700 doctoral and postdoctoral biomedical trainees at UMass Medical School while contributing to the scholarship of the field.

We are seeking to hire a postdoctoral fellow to join our efforts in implementing, evaluating, and disseminating career development programs for doctoral and postdoctoral scholars in the biomedical sciences. This is a full-time training position intended to prepare a scientist interested in moving into career development, academic administration, teaching, or similar career paths while bringing a scholarly perspective to their future endeavor. A core project will be coordinating Career Pathways Communities, an innovative learning community model to enhance career exploration, developed via our NIH BEST award and now part of the graduate school’s curriculum for basic biomedical sciences PhD students. Other projects may include curating resources for a weekly newsletter, hosting workshops focused on biomedical PhD job search skills, and developing data-driven reports for communication to campus stakeholders and external audiences.  The postdoctoral fellow will be mentored in teaching/facilitating career development programs, career counseling, supporting trainees in the job search process, working within an administrative role, and publishing educational approaches. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to attend a regional or national conference to better learn the depth and breadth of the field. The individual will report to and be mentored by the Assistant Dean for Career & Professional Development, who directs the cBCD, and have access to other educational leaders within the GSBS.

Example responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating curricula and programs, particularly those related to PhD career pathways
  • Teaching via facilitation of structured exercises and discussion
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative evaluation data
  • Preparing reports for campus and external audiences, including visualizations of quantitative data and summaries of findings
  • Curating resources for a weekly newsletter to students and postdocs on campus
  • Working with employers as guest professionals on-campus from a variety of scientific career paths
  • Other duties as is necessary or aligns with training goals
  • Doctoral or equivalent degree (currently held or expect to obtain shortly at time of application) in a scientific discipline, educational leadership, counseling, communication, or a related degree
  • Excellent professionalism
  • Demonstrated ability to create timelines, meet project deadlines, assess priorities, take initiative, and operate in a flexible manner in order to meet the dynamic needs of the group and projects
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex data and represent it clearly and effectively (in writing and visually)
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and independent judgment.
  • Ability to be discreet and handle confidential information
  • Excellent computer/technical skills
  • Ability to work within a team and independently
  • Innovation, flexibility, and creativity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including professional correspondence

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of biomedical research culture in academic and industry settings
  • Experience coordinating programs in the area of career development
  • Skills in teaching and individual advising
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary groups
  • Experience using MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), web development tools, and social media

This is a one-year temporary training position, with opportunity to renew pending mutual agreement and funding availability.
