GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Bursar and the  Director of Financial Aid, the Student Loan Manager is responsible for managing all phases of collection of federal and institutional student loan programs at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (“UMMS”).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reconciles institutional student loan funds with records at the third party billing servicer and processes journal entries in the UMMS General Ledger
  • Ensures accuracy of all student account and address information and processes deferment, postponement, and cancellation certifications.
  • Performs due diligence procedures, e.g., sending past due notices, telephoning and or emailing delinquent borrowers, skip tracing, requesting hold on certification of academic records, and placing defaulted loans with collection agencies.
  • Independently evaluates requests for economic hardship deferments and forbearance.
  • Manages Learning Contract records by preparing materials, e.g., minutes, agendas, appeals, and certification forms for Learning Contract Advisory Group meetings, develops both paper and web-based forms and written communications, and maintains accurate data in PeopleSoft database. Processes journal entries for the Learning Contract disbursements to PeopleSoft student financial system.
  • Tracks professional activities of graduates who receive certain Title VII aid.
  • Bills, collects, and posts payments for defaulted Massachusetts Medical Society Loans.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of related work experience. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student loan programs, exposure to bookkeeping concepts, credit concepts, and MS Excel and Word. 
  • Strong counseling skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills; color vision for discerning color-coded filing system.
