POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Veterinary Services or Designee, the training specialist is responsible for implementing the UMass Medical School animal care and use training program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Training Program
- Train personnel in basic laboratory animal techniques including but not limited to: handling, restraint, injection, phlebotomy, aseptic surgery, anesthesia and euthanasia techniques.
- Update and refine training program techniques, materials and SOPs
- Maintain training records and coordinate notification of institutional regulatory bodies
- Responsible for maintaining current IACUC training protocols, training budget, and ensuring the program is compliant with applicable regulations and policies
- Prepare and administer annual training budget
Departmental Support
- Teach AALAS certification classes at all levels (ALAT, LAT, LATg)
- Assist in identifying and implementing continuing education opportunities for staff
- Participate in the conduct of Departmental animal welfare/science research projects
- Coordinate assigned Veterinary Services functions
- Perform hands-on research techniques using animals
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent
- LATg certification
- 5 - 10 years’ experience
- Current hands-on experience working with multiple species of laboratory animals including rodents, rabbits, non-human primates, small ruminants, and swine in a research environment.
- Experienced in common laboratory animal research techniques including animal handling, restraint, biological sample collection, injection techniques, basic surgical & post-operative techniques, euthanasia and animal facility operations.
- Working knowledge of rodent barrier facility methods, surgical support, diagnostic laboratory procedures, laboratory animal health surveillance programs (especially rodents), animal health monitoring and associated regulatory requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1 - 2 years’ experience
- Previous teaching or training experience and responsibilities.
- ABSL-3 experience
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Use of PPE is required: scrubs, disposable gown, exam gloves, shoe covers, head/beard cover, surgical/N95 mask. Must be able to shower as necessary. Work with live animal’s entails exposure to animal allergens, sharps, anesthetic gases, biohazards and radiation.
- Clinical diagnostic equipment, autoclave, radiographic imaging, surgical equipment (including anesthesia machines and monitors) are used
