GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the Lead or designee, the Console Operator responsible for the operation and monitoring the Building Environmental controls, fire safety systems and life safety/life support and mechanical systems throughout the Institutions and off-site locations. Respond accordingly to established procedures to alarm and emergency conditions reported by computer system, alarm panels, telephone and verbal requests.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate and interpret data of multiple Energy Management and Fire Safety Systems.
- Function as the first responder to emergency situations with respect to the mechanical and life support systems through analysis of computer data and reaction to alarm systems.
- Input Operational changes in computer software where needed. Run historical trends on operating systems. Start-up and shutdown of all connected systems.
- Monitor and interpret medical gas system data; initiate actions in case of system emergencies and re-order medical supplies.
- Monitor fire alarm system, and respond to alarms according to established procedures.
- Maintain a log of work locations of all contractors working on site and Issue ID badges.
- Coordinate pages for department staff and maintain communications during routine operation and emergencies.
- Maintain continual contact with Building Systems Operating Engineers, Power Plant, and off-site Personnel for efficient operation of Building Systems and appropriate action in emergencies.
- Communicate with the public, receive complaints, initiating emergency procedures, relay or obtain information, and document the communication through the work-order system.
- Input work order data into database, when needed and generate reports.
- Responsible for inventory of site keys, maintenance trucks and issuing of hot work permits.
- While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification; where the work or task does not require a specific license
- Perform related duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience
- 2 years computer systems operation and clerical related experience, including ability to maintain records.
- Must be able to communicate with people and diagnose system problems from verbal complaints.
- Skilled in reading architectural floor plans and some knowledge of building mechanical systems.
- Ability to remain within the confines of the Console Room for the entire tour of duty.

Under the general supervision of the Lead or designee
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May exercise supervision over employees of a lesser grade for assigned tasks or projects
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock; may work in confined spaces on ladders. Ability to perform physically arduous tasks; normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, manual dexterity for handling large machines and small components/tools; ability to lift heavy objects; visual acuity for inspection and repair of systems and equipment.
