GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the general direction of the Director or designee, the Senior Database Administrator applies principles, concepts, and standards to a wide application of projects to define database organizations, standards, controls, procedures, and documentation. The Sr. DBA develops solutions to complex problems providing technical support in the definition, design, and creation of database environments, the development of database solutions for business problems, data architectures, database management system facilities and capabilities, as well as the operation and tuning of databases.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintain availability and optimal performance of all databases
• Perform installations, upgrades, and patches to SQL RDBMS such as Microsoft or Oracle
• Perform capacity monitoring and management
• Write SQL scripts for database maintenance analysis and problem diagnosis
• Work with vendor support for trouble resolution
• Design, implement, and monitor backup/recovery procedures of all databases
• Work with development staff to maintain & enhance database operations & integrity
• Work with Enterprise Network Services staff to design and manage server environment and infrastructure including physical layout, environment, backup/restore utilities, and monitoring
• Ensure quality control through testing and debugging software for accuracy, completeness, and system integrity
• Interact effectively (verbally, written, etc.) with users, vendors and management to ensure that the delivery and use of application is consistent with agreed upon project goals
• Provide occasional unscheduled off-hours support
• May take lead role in development and enhancement project teams responsible for database tasks
• Continue development of skills and expertise in present and emerging technologies by participating in formal training when possible and by independent self-teaching and tutorials
• Provide data analysis and database design as part of an integrated team developing custom software applications
• Partners with software developers to provide application access to data, develops stored procedures, and optimizes data retrieval and persistence
• Facilitate data-driven application design and implementation
• Lead the development and enhancement of project teams responsible for database tasks
• Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Management Systems, or equivalent
• 6+ years of experience in production database support
• Demonstrated experience with identifying and resolving database bottlenecks and performance issues (SQL optimization)
• Experience in the design of database management systems and application development
• Experience in data analysis and database design appropriate to application area: Dataflow diagrams; Normalization; E-R Modeling, Referential Integrity
• Experience in computing in a distributed environment including connectivity, interface, and file transfer issues
• Expert knowledge of Oracle or Microsoft SQL RDBMS
• Expert understanding of Windows Server OS
• Good understanding of LINUX Operating System
• Solid interpersonal skills, with ability to work well with people of all levels of informational technology expertise and comfort in varied organizational relationships
• Ability to think clearly and take the best course of action in high pressure situations
• Mastery of ETL scripts, SSIS packages, SSRS Reporting, and SQL Profiling tools
• Ability to travel to off-site locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Experience with OOP languages
• Knowledge of Cloud Computing and Cloud Database Administration
• Knowledge of NoSQL Database Design and Administration
• Knowledge of application development and system integration
