GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:  

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Designee, the Research Associate performs a variety of complex research experiments.

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts in-depth analysis of research experiments
  • Performs complex laboratory experiments
  • Interprets data, forms conclusion, and decides on and plans next experiments to be done with a high degree of independence
  • Compiles and analyzes data and performs computations using image analysis software, spreadsheets, graphing, and curve fitting software
  • May modify protocols and be responsible for a single, independent research project
  • Assists in writing the text of scientific publications and grants.  Reviews literature
  • Trains new laboratory personnel, students, and collaborators
  • Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Complies with all safety and infection control standards
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, or equivalent experience
  • 1 year relevant research experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Strong ability to analyze complex visual data in a quantitative and objective manner
  • Judgment and action skills required to solve commonly encountered problems

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, or designee

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 

May functionally supervise Lab Technicians and Aides

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Wet chemistry laboratory, and may require appropriate contact with biohazards, radionuclides, toxins, animals, and human specimens. 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Alonso laboratory in the Diabetes Center of Excellence at the University of Massachusetts Medical School is searching for a Research Associate candidate for a new NIH-funded project. We will be studying an exciting new role for the endoplasmic reticulum in insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells, using in vivo mouse studies as well as molecular, cell biological and genomic methods. A competitive salary and excellent benefits package will be provided commensurate with experience.

 

The person in this position will contribute directly to the central research programs of the laboratory. They will perform in vivo and in vitro experiments to analyze beta cell proliferation, survival, maturation status and function. We are particularly interested in ER stress pathways and how they intersect with diabetogenic processes in the pancreas. In addition to experimental duties, the Research Associate will contribute to laboratory organization, stock maintenance, and general laboratory management. The successful candidate will be energetic, respectful, and contribute to a positive lab environment as we work to advance knowledge in the field of diabetes.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

Excellent cell culture technique, experience working with DNA, RNA and protein, data analysis skills, familiarity with lab-relevant software. Experience with mouse models is a plus but not required. Essential qualities are a high level of attention to detail, willingness to ask for help, excellent communication skills, team participation, goal-oriented work schedule (finish what you start, even if it takes longer than expected).
