GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Director of Office of Research or designee, and in collaboration with the IACUC and IBC Chairpersons, the Research Project Director contributes constructively and creatively in ensuring a quality and compliant institutional animal care and use program.

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze animal use proposals prior to their submission to the IACUC to identify any potential issues related to compliance with federal and state policies and regulations regarding the use of animals in research.
  • Consult with investigators to assist them in addressing issues prior to submission. Notify the investigators in writing of the IACUC review results, including any stipulations for final approval that have been designated by the reviewer, and/or counsel the investigator on how to improve the protocol application and resubmit it in a more appropriate form
  • Determine that any stipulations have been met prior to resubmitting the response to the reviewer for final approval
  • In collaboration with Chairs of IACUC and IBC, ensure that UMMS policy development is consistent with emerging regulatory mandates
  • Communicate with the federal regulatory agencies (USDA, OLAW, NIH and CDC) on a periodic basis, maintain federal assurance documents and annual reports, and assist in preparation for agency inspections and audits
  • Maintain contact with national accreditation association (AAALAC), oversee and contribute to the development and timely submission of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Program Description, and facilitate accreditation visits
  • Prepare IACUC and IBC meeting agendas, minutes, semi-annual program reviews, and facility inspection reports
  • Create special reports in response to committee requests, policies and position statements, and special monitoring requirements as directed by Director of Research
  • Provide orientation of new IACUC Committee members with regard to expectations and responsibilities; including but not limited to, the animal proposal review process, semi-annual program review, and facility inspections
  • Facilitate the investigators submission and organization of information for annual and semiannual reports required by regulatory and accrediting agencies Direct and /or assist in the follow-up to these reports to ensure regulatory compliance
  • In conjunction with the Chairs of IACUC and IBC, develop effective action plans for instituting new policies and procedures
  • Remains current in knowledge of the changing federal regulations and any other issues involving animal research and bio-safety
  • Works with the Director to implement any changes in new procedures involving studies with animal subjects and/or bio-safety requirements
  • Assists in developing correspondence, editing and disseminating new information regarding animal research procedures and bio-safety requirements
  • As an agent of the IACUC, oversees the institutional Animal Training Program and ensures the provision of basic and advanced educational opportunities for faculty and staff through workshops, AALAS basic and advanced certification classes, seminars, and special topics
  • Provide information to the committee regarding current USDA regulations and PHS policies
  • Coordinate writing projects for the Office of Research, IACUC and IBC
  • Oversee the appropriate maintenance of the renewal system by the IACUC and IBC Coordinators
  • Provide individual guidance to researchers, administrators, and attending veterinarians regarding IACUC and IBC protocols, procedures, and processes
  • Direct daily operations; including supervision, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions of IACUC and IBC coordinators.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 7-10 years of experience in research management and administration
  • Proficient in database programs and functions, MS Word, Access and Excel
  • Knowledge of the requirements/interpretation of state and federal regulations for research animal welfare and Bio-safety Knowledge of IACUC/IBC processes and procedures
  • High-level organizational skills and effective interpersonal skills in oral and written communications
  • Ability to handle complex and confidential communications, information and documents
  • Ability to work independently with sensitive issues, appropriately prioritizing and communicating those needing higher-level institutional review and response
  • Ability to collegially interact with researchers, faculty, clinical and school employees to provide guidance and assistance with meeting regulatory requirements.
