Overview:

The Assistant Biosafety Officer will provide critical safety and compliance assistance to programs such as biosafety lab inspections, training for and shipping of infectious agents, conducting risk assessments, and conducting incident investigations.  Other responsibilities may include providing support to various EH&S programs including being available for emergency response (24/7) as necessary.

 

This position will report to the Senior Biological Safety Officer within Environmental Health &Safety and act as the Alternate Responsible Official for the Select Agent Program.  The individual will assist in overseeing safety and regulatory compliance of the BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratories as well as the BSL-3, ABSL-3, and Select Agent laboratories.

 

Responsibilities:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Daily supervision of EH&S Safety Technicians, Safety Associates, and Safety Specialists I and II
  • Manage all aspects of EH&S compliance programs including establishing continual performance improvement
  • Develop, manage and conduct training and provide technical guidance and advice, to personnel, faculty and students on the assigned Environmental Health and Safety compliance programs including New Employee Orientation and annual training
  • Develop, manage, and conduct worksite evaluations, risk assessments, inspections, audits, investigations, or surveillance surveys for the assigned environmental health and safety compliance programs including being a team leader or coordinator. Create and prepare checklists for the inspections. Identify potential risks and recommend appropriate solutions
  • Review, analyze and present  data for trends, deficiencies, quality control, and seeking solutions to correct identified issues
  • Maintain records and documentation including training records, waste manifests, SDS, safety equipment certifications, hazard surveillance reports, lab inspection reports, and other regulatory compliance documents
  • Respond to urgent and emergency calls, questions, and requests; including on-call services, following all regulations and procedures
  • Participate in the EH&S’ Emergency Response Team which requires physically capable to respond to and clean up chemical and biological spills and as necessary wearing full face respirators and other PPE
  • Maintain, test and calibrate equipment, monitors, inventory, and supplies used for compliance management, may include performing chemical fume hood testing, emergency shower and eye wash testing, and performing respiratory fit testing
  • Write and present technical safety reports, assessment reports, hazard surveillance reports, lab inspection reports, and incident review reports
  • Develop, write, review, and update policies, procedures, and safety manuals
  • Interact with members of the hospital and the scientific community and participate in Institutional Committees providing oral and written reports and briefings
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Studies, Environmental Science, Fire Safety, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health and Safety, Emergency Management or a related degree
  • 5 years of experience in environmental health & safety or related field
  • Requires advanced level knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to Env. Health & Safety and EH&S principles, such as, EPA, DOT, MADEP, OSHA, MADPH, MADOL, DEA, TJC, CDC, NIH, APHIS regulations and standards. Advanced ability to interpret, implement, maintain, and report status of Environmental Health & Safety compliance programs as required by federal, state, local, accrediting, and recognized oversight agencies
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office software and database applications
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and the ability to travel to off-site locations and respond to matters of urgency, sometimes after normal working hours
  • Is certified or if not certified, have the ability to become certified, as OSHA 40 hour Emergency Responder within six months, and be DOT and RCRA trained for waste  manifest signing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

MS degree, RBP, BSL-3/ABSL-3 experience, Select Agent experience (SRA) access approval.

Additional Information:

Discipline in Biosafety/Select Agent:

  • Ability to obtain FBI clearance for Select Agent approval. 
  • Advanced knowledge of NIH, BMBL Guidelines, rDNA regulations, CDC, APHIS, and MA DPH regulations, biosafety including Biosafety Level 3 and Animal Biosafety Level 3 regulations and, packing and shipping of infectious materials regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of biosafety including performing lab safety inspections. 
  • Possess aptitude and willingness to don appropriate PPE for entry into BSL 3 containment areas.
