GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:                                                      

Under the general direction of the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the ACIO of Academic Technology is responsible for enabling faculty, staff and student achieve UMASS Academic mission by supporting the existing information technology, while introducing new technology for improved results.  This role leads and advocates for technology innovation focused on the academic mission of UMass Medical School. This role will utilize various team members throughout the IT department to manage projects and deliver innovative and efficient solutions.  This requires the successful candidate to possess extraordinary inter-personal skills, promote trust with their actions, and put the spirit of “one team” above all else.  To ensure that the Universitys academic systems are amongst the top in the country, this candidate will need to demonstrate strong networking and change management skills.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Establish and implement strategic roadmap that demonstrates technology best practices as used in other medical schools specifically and the academic community in general.
  • Responsible for the design, implementation and support of new Curriculum Management system
  • Partner with other IT leads to establish a consistent application delivery mechanism for academic applications.
  • Act as a liaison between the academic community and IT to ensure that the technology needs of the academic community are met.
  • Directs the deliverance of innovative tool sets and technologies in support of the University academic mission
  • Directs instructional technology services, distance learning, and multimedia resources to support the educational and research mission of the University.
  • Responsible for the administration, support and design for BBlearn, UMMSs enterprise online learning management system
  • Responsible for campus teaching, learning and scholarly activities through management of instructional technologist support
  • Responsible for budget and personnel in Academic Technology Services. Establish and manage any student technology consulting for IT services.
  • Develops and monitors compliance with policies and procedures for information services and institutional objectives. Ensures the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive data and compliance with stated policy.
  • Provides management and supervision of assigned staff to maintain efficient work-flow and quality control of institutional computing.
  • Serves as the Chief Information Officers representative on various internal and external committees, panels, etc. Evaluates issues to provide recommendations for action to the CIO.
  • Responsible to maintain excellent knowledge base of industry trends and developments.
  • May perform other related duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree
  • 10 years experience supporting academic environments, preferably within an institution of higher education. Experience within an Academic Medical Center and/or health services is strongly preferred.
  • 10 years of demonstrated, progressively responsible experience in the leadership and implementation of information technology solutions.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of a wide range of information systems technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in an academic IT setting with a comprehensive knowledge of education, curriculum development as it relates to instructional technology and ability to creatively apply technological solutions.
  • Exceptional senior management skills in human resources, financial management and administrative policy development. Innovation, flexibility and creativity.
  • A thorough understanding, experience and commitment to customer service.
  • As a member of the senior management team, the candidate must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and a commitment to the mission of the institution.
  • Ability to travel to off- site locations.

  • Strong strategic and operational planning skills, anticipates problems and proactively engages appropriate stakeholders in implementing customer centered solutions 
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus (internal and external) for the integration and implementation of information technology strategies
  • Ability to provide innovative IT solutions within quality, cost and timing requirements of internal customers
  • Experience in fast turnaround IT solutions and deployments to meet changing business demands and enables  pursuit of strategic business opportunities
  • Demonstrated success in implementation of large scale, complex IT deployments within required  timeframes of internal customers
  • Demonstrated success in recruitment, selection and development of a diverse range of high performing IT professionals
