GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Quality and Patient Safety Nurse Consultant is responsible for working with client organizations to promote a culture of safety, high reliability, positive patient and staff engagement, and performance excellence aligned with national patient safety goals, as well as state licensure and other regulatory requirements. The Patient Safety and Quality Nurse Consultant works collaboratively with the Deputy Managing Director of Performance Excellence and Health Care Operations and the Medical Director of Quality and Safety, to support the development and implementation of best-in-class quality and safety programs within client organizations, to support regulatory, compliance, accreditation and to mitigate organizational risk.

MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory and licensure requirements, both state and federal, as well as industry best practices such as the Joint Commission and others.
  • Conducts on-site visits at client organizations to:
    • Competently evaluates standards of care in assigned client organizations to ensure they meet current regulations and applicable accreditation standards., In the course of evaluating such, the QPS RN Consultant will review policy, observe the practice, and independently follow through on all objectives.
    • Synthesizes and comprehensively documents a thorough evaluation of such standards.
    • Escalates immediate threat patient safety concerns to both ForHealth project leadership and local organizational leadership.
    • Provides written and/or electronic documentation of all client quality assessments.
  • Provide feedback to individual staff members on matters related to quality and patient safety, in an empathetic and thorough manner as needed and communicate issues to leadership.
  • Assesses documentation required by regulation or accreditation (e.g. Restraint documentation and debriefing, Incident Reports, fall assessments, medication occurrence reports, etc.) provides complete assessment summaries, and involves staff if needed.
  • Audits nursing documentation, including for patients on special precautions, observations, or those who have had a significant event (e.g. fall, behavioral change or incident, Restraint documentation, etc.) to evaluate adherence to standards and best practices and to ensure it is documented, escalated to leadership if a deviation from standards or major safety concerns is identified.
  • Review initial investigation of incidents and accidents that occur to patients or staff.
  • Review and assess compliance with action/mitigation plans for patient safety and quality incidents/events.
  • Ensure appropriate reporting, documentation, and follow-up of administrative issues and concerns are identified.
  • Serves as a professional role model and resource in the process of conducting all activities.
  • Reviews relevant nursing and/or hospital policies and procedures, as they relate to the scope of work for the client engagement.
  • Participate in appropriate huddles or meetings or activities as assigned.
  • Accept assignments as directed.
  • Establish a rapport with all staff, and patients, evaluating patients responses, and in conjunction with other team members, the dignity and human rights of the patients are met.
  • Adhere to all policies regarding confidentiality of patient information as well as confidentiality that pertains to client engagement.
  • Wear appropriate identification while on duty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Applicants must have at least 5 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience as an RN in a recognized hospital, or psychiatric facility
  • Supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity preferred as well as a graduate degree with a major in Nursing preferred.
    • Education toward such a degree may be prorated based on the proportion of the requirements.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and other regulatory requirements with significant participation in these types of surveys.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and ability to set priorities and manage multiple demands effectively.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to travel within Massachusetts.
