This internship program will begin Monday June 5th and will end Friday, August 11th. The pay is $16/hour and the position is expected to be full-time over those 10 weeks. This will be a hybrid internship. 

About Emerging Professionals Summer Internship Program (EPSIP) at UMass Chan Medical School 

The Emerging Professionals Summer Internship Program (EPSIP) is a paid internship experience for talented college students.  Individuals historically underrepresented in STEM, health science and medicine are strongly encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to students that identify from one of the following underrepresented groups in STEM, health science and medicine:  Black/African Americans, Hispanic or Latinx, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders, individuals with a disability or the first in their family to attend college, are also strongly encourage to apply. 

Participants in the EPSIP program benefit from: 

  • a 10-week, paid summer business internship at UMMS with an administrative focus 
  • a unique opportunity to be guided and mentored for the world of business in academic medicine 
  • professional development series of lectures, networking, mentoring, resume and job search preparation, and more 
  • an opportunity to discover their passions and interests and discern which career path is best for you 

Introduction to Scientific Marketing and Communication 

The RNA Therapeutics Institute (RTI) faculty are recognized as scientific trailblazers, and include a Nobel Laureate, the 2018 RNA Society early and mid-career award recipients, and two Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators. The student will be exposed to a department conducting world-renowned research, as well the opportunity to learn how to assist with increasing visibility of the RTI through multiple platforms to a variety of audiences in real-world contexts. The student will also learn how to communicate the need for basic science, and which modes of communication are best for a range of audiences.  

The student will gain experience in the following areas: 

  • Event support: Assist in on-site and virtual scientific symposium, including registering attendees, providing logistical information, and gain exposure on managing a hybrid scientific event. 
  • Database/content management 
  • Assisting in website editing on Optimizely 
  • Conducting additional research into using Salesforce/Pardot for creating webpages and forms and research into emerging RNA therapeutics companies to update current Salesforce database. 
  • Updating the RTIs databases for alumni, copying the database format to create an “Ask a Scientist” database of alumni who want to do outreach in the community. 
  • Digital scientific marketing and communications:  
  • Assist in development of communications materials for social media and website. This may include content creation, brainstorming social media campaigns, and identifying best practices across platforms.  Candidate will learn how to use Pardot/Salesforce marketing software and edit website pages.  
  • Help implement UMass Chans commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion by creating and updating accessible content, and considering a variety of cultural contexts to ensure the RTIs website is relevant to a global audience.  
  • Conducting additional research on social media best practices, website accessibility, and new ways to engage our audience.  
  • Scientific Writing: Hone scientific writing skills by preparing material for the RTI in a variety of contexts including creating and updating Wikipedia pages for each faculty member in the RTI. 

The student will have the opportunity to interact with alumni, students, research faculty and staff to gain knowledge and understanding of the activities in the department.  

At the end of the internship: 

  • The student will have learned website editing and experience in a variety of software platforms (Pardot, Salesforce, Optimizely), as well as learn how to increase brand awareness and visibility. 
  • The student will create a database to be used by grades K-12 and undergraduate institutions of UMass Chan alumni and scientists who want to be involved in outreach to younger students.  

Candidates should have an eye for visual communication, social media experience, experience/interest in photo/video/writing/editing, interest in science/education, and the ability to adhere to tight deadlines.  Enthusiasm and attention to detail are necessary. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates pursuing bachelors degree or recent graduates
  • Related experience preferred
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Ability to use standard office tools and software (MS-Office)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: journalism, marketing, writing, professional social media, graphic design/visual arts, interviewing, website content development or photography/videography.
