POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the supervision of the DevOps Manager or designee, the Associate DevOps Engineer is responsible for serving as a contributing member of an innovative DevOps team who manage deployments and administration of traditional and cloud-based infrastructure and resources in a multi-cloud environment. They will collaborate with team members to maintain, monitor, and implement changes to services and solutions to maintain availability, latency, and overall system health. They will work to build skills in IaC development and tools, along with native cloud solutions. They will collaborate with DevOps and development teams to support the CICD process including source code, builds, and deployments. The Associate DevOps Engineer will work alongside peers to collaborate with other teams to bridge the gap between the development, infrastructure, and network teams.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborate with peers to engineer, automate, and orchestrate system provisioning and maintenance processes using modern cloud tools and technologies.
  • Collaborate with peers to manage cloud and on-prem infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Collaborate with peers to automate day two operations utilizing programming and scripting technologies such as Ansible, PowerShell, Bash, HCL, Python, and JavaScript.
  • Troubleshoot problems and work with peers to provide thoughtful solutions and root cause analysis with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Manage, maintain and monitor the University’s CICD process for deployments to Development, Test, and Production environments.
  • Manage application and database monitoring services utilizing UMass Chan’s standard monitoring tools.
  • Manage, deploy, and monitor cloud solutions including applications, cloud native services, cloud infrastructure, and container services.
  • Test and Implement IaC standard templates for cloud and non-cloud solutions, ensuring availability, scalability, security, and compliance using IaC tools such as Terraform Cloud, Ansible, and Vault Services.
  • Participate in operational support to ensure service reliability.
  • Participate in on-call and deployment rotation.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • 1 year of DevOps, CloudOps, or SRE work experience.
  • 1 year of experience with continuous integration, build management, automated deployments, release engineering, and / or configuration management.
  • Knowledge of software development and/or technology experience with an understanding of cloud services.
  • Knowledge in configuration management and infrastructure as code solutions such as Ansible, Terraform.
  • Understanding or exposure to Cloud Native solutions in either Azure or AWS.
  • Understanding or exposure to code/scripting technologies such as Ansible, PowerShell, Bash, HCL, Python, and JavaScript or similar.
  • Understanding or exposure to development and implementation of infrastructure as code IaC templates for on-premises and cloud solutions.
  • Understanding or exposure to software configuration management systems and/or source code version control systems, Subversion, Git, TFS, and Azure DevOps.
  • Understanding or exposure to Unix/Linux and Microsoft Servers, Apache/Tomcat, IIS, and Weblogic webservers technologies.
  • Understanding or exposure to software development languages such as C#, Java, JavaScript, React, Angular, or similar.
  • Understanding of SDLC processes and code management practices.
  • Understanding or exposure to Agile, Scrum, or SAFe development methodologies.
  • Understanding or exposure to code/script technologies using either Ansible, PowerShell, Bash, HCL, Python, and JavaScript or similar.
  • Understanding or exposure to Azure or AWS Cloud solutions.
  • Understanding or exposure to support and maintain applications that communicate over the network, understanding of how firewall and load balance works, and the ability to use protocol level analysis tool such as Wireshark to troubleshoot problems.
  • Solid interpersonal skills, with ability to work well with people of all levels of information technology expertise.
  • Proven interest in IT and passion in furthering the mission of UMass Chan. 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in troubleshooting and solving traditional and cloud application solutions.
  • Experience in Azure and AWS Cloud Services or similar.
  • Experience developing/scripting solutions to automate configuration management and infrastructure as code (IaC).
  • Experience with Git and Azure DevOps CICD build and pipeline.
  • Experience or understanding of running Linux or Windows Servers.
  • Experience or understanding of databases technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or similar.
  • Experience or understanding with infrastructure as code and configuration management practices and technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, or similar.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, HCL, Bash, JavaScript or similar.
  • Experience and knowledge in application hosting solutions including (IIS, Tomcat, Apache).
  • Understanding of Microsoft technology, including, but not limited to: Windows Server and Client OS, Active Directory, Remote Desktop Services, SQL, IIS, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Microsoft Azure and AWS certifications
