POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Research Computing or designee, the HPC System Administration Engineer I, supports UMass’ High Performance Computing cluster, connected storage and networking operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Under the direction of the Director of Research Technology, provide support to HPC end users.
- Maintain HPC clusters’ hardware and software related to: computing, storage, and networking.
- Acknowledge and resolve user service requests utilizing the service request management system.
- Apply standard principles, concepts and techniques toward the identification and resolution of user problems
- Interact with other Systems Administration staff and Manager for assistance and direction, occasionally involved in routine cross organization issues
- Escalate more difficult user issues as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or equivalent experience.
- 1-2 years’ work experience in a Linux System Administration role or similar
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to travel to off-site locations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Capable of contributing within a team, exhibiting a high level of initiative, and having an eagerness to learn and implement new technologies.
- Strong understanding of and experience working with UNIX/Linux operating systems and basic IP networking.
- Experience with open-source projects and compiling software from source
- Ability to automate tasks using scripting languages such as bash, Perl, Python, etc.
- Sufficient organization to record procedures accurately and ensure reproducibility.
- Experience with Academic research and research ecosystems, high-performance compute clusters and job scheduling software.
- Familiarity with parallel computing tools such as MPI implementations.
- Experience with open-source and/or commercial scientific software such as MATLAB and R.
- Familiarity with container services like Kubernetes/Docker/Singularity
- Experience with integration and/or deployment of cloud-based solutions in AWS, Azure, or GCP a plus
