GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the general supervision of the nurse manager or designee, participates as a member of the mental health team on an inpatient Mental Health Unit.  Provides direct patient care including; treatment planning, implementing plans, evaluating treatment, discharge planning, and milieu activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates and shares responsibility for the development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment
  • Serves as a leader or co-leader in group settings (such as community meetings, activity groups, expressive arts, psychotherapy)
  • Coordinates treatment for selected patients in collaboration with a staff nurse
  • Assists in medical emergencies; may initiate CPR
  • Provides psychosocial history and metal status assessment of patients in mental health crisis
  • Assists patients in achieving and maintaining appropriate activity levels of daily living
  • Participates in therapy as indicated by the treatment plan
  • Maintains patient records
  • Documents information such as evaluations, assessments, consultation, referral, and disposition
  • Maintains logs as required
  • Develops reports, statistical information, and record management as required
  • Attends staff meetings, supervisory sessions, patient related review meetings, and in-service training sessions as required 
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in Psychology, Human Services or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in a health related field
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of multidisciplinary teams both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work in a team setting and in group situations
  • Must be able to assist in the physical restraint of disturbed patients

This position is required to Visit clients/subjects in the Central/Western Ma community and does not work on inpatient units

Ideal candidate will have experience providing support in community settings
