POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Colubri Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Medical School is seeking to hire a Data Visualization/UX Designer to build tools to help us understand and stop infectious disease outbreaks. Under the direction of the PI or designee, the person in this role will work at all stages of the design process of software tools for infectious disease modeling, clinical machine learning, and visualization of biomedical datasets. The candidate for this position will have the opportunity to join in a nimble research group, and work closely with other members of the Colubri Lab on the design and development of a portfolio of software applications integrating research, education, and community outreach. The role will be responsible for conducting initial user research, creating wireframes and visual designs, applying information design and data visualization techniques for interactive display of epidemiological and biomedical data, and iteratively validating solutions with users. They will be expected to perform duties in a manner consistent with a complex, diverse, and dynamic environment and serve a complex research, medical, and education community.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Investigate users’ needs, tasks, and goals and translate them into creative concepts and functional designs.
  • Create competitive audits, surveys, lo-fi sketches, wireframes, user flows, personas, and clickable prototypes.
  • Advise the team on best HCI and user-centered practices.
  • Work alongside medical domain experts and present to a variety of domain-specific stakeholders.
  • Design of static and interactive visualizations of complex bioinformatics datasets.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to iterate as the design is implemented and to bring products from conception to launch.
  • Serve as an advocate for end users in both scientific and patient/participant communities.
  • Work on novel solutions for demographic under-representation and over-representation in research studies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or MS in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Information Science, Graphic Design, Computer Science or a related field or program (including ABET-accredited) with comparable coursework or experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in UX methods, UI/UX design, or human subjects research & experimental design.
  • Portfolio of UX design work demonstrating ability to work across the product development process, from establishing UX strategy and conceptual foundations to successfully delivering high quality products.
  • Skilled at creating interaction design solutions across desktop, web and mobile applications.
  • Strong visual design skills, able to create compelling, high-fidelity product screens.
  • Proven experience working in diverse teams comprising complementary skill sets.
  • Experience with software for prototyping (e.g., Axure RP, Adobe XD, InVision), UI design (Sketch or Figma), and project management (Jira or Trello).
  • Experience working with data using spreadsheet software (Excel) or dataviz tools such as Tableau.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiar working with design systems that consistently scale across platforms.
  • Understanding of accessibility and how it relates to UX design.
  • Experience with programming (JavaScript, Python, R) and ability to implement prototypes using code is a plus.
  • Life Sciences industry and human subjects research knowledge is a plus.
