POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the direction of the Director of Research Computing or designee, the HPC System Administration Engineer I, supports UMass’ High Performance Computing cluster, connected storage and networking operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide support to HPC end users, under the direction of the Director of Research Computing or designee
  • Maintain HPC cluster’s hardware and software related to: computing, storage, and networking.
  • Acknowledge and resolve user service requests utilizing the service request management system.
  • Apply standard principles, concepts and techniques toward the identification and resolution of user problems
  • Interact with other Systems Administration staff and Manager for assistance and direction, occasionally involved in routine cross organization issues
  • Escalate more difficult user issues as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or equivalent experience.
  • 1-2 years work experience in a Linux System Administration role or similar
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Capable of contributing within a team, exhibiting a high level of initiative, and having an eagerness to learn and implement new technologies.
  • Strong understanding of and experience working with Linux operating systems and basic IP networking.
  • Experience with open-source projects and compiling software from source
  • Ability to automate tasks using scripting languages such as bash, perl, python, etc.
  • Sufficient organizational skills to record procedures accurately and ensure reproducibility.
  • Experience with Academic research and researchers, High Performance Compute Clusters and Scheduling Software
  • Familiarity with parallel computing tools such as MPI implementations.
  • Experience with open-source and/or commercial scientific software such as MATLAB and R.
