GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

 

Under the direction of the ACIO or Directordesignee, the Senior Project Manager is responsible for supporting information technology projects at the UMass Medical School. The overall responsibility of this position is to ensure that projects address customer requirements, and projects are completed on time and within budget and that competing priorities and related staffing allocations are managed.  The project manager will adhere to UMMS’s project management guidelines, with the goal of insuring quality deliverables that achieve customer satisfaction.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, coordinate, and document project related activities of large scale and highly visible projects that will vary in scope and affected business units, manage resources within assigned project teams in a matrix environment, and document the project’s activities
  • Manage the implementation of information systems in attainment of the Medical School’s strategic and tactical business plans
  • Manage a portfolio of projects on behalf of the business customer and identify priorities, dependencies, and conflicts where multiple business initiatives are being managed
  • Develop, adapt, and facilitate project management process and methodologies through all phases of a project’s lifecycle within complex business and technical environments. Direct all of the project’s phases, managing each phase with a consistent approach and methodology, using standard supporting processes and tools
  • Identify, define, and refine project scope and objectives, including any constraints. Perform initial feasibility study (including cost analysis) prior to formalization of project
  • Develop and maintain an effective relationship with the project’s steering committee, sponsor(s), customer(s), functional managers, and project teams
  • Communicate with all appropriate parties to ensure that the project’s objectives, scope, and expected deliverables of each project phase are understood. Facilitate communication of the project’s status, budget, costs, issues, and related information to same
  • Direct and lead an assembled project team in effectively addressing the client’s requirements according to the project’s schedule and approved budget
  • Assess necessary skill sets and competencies of team members to accomplish project objectives, identify, and recommend specific resource requirements and/or training requirements
  • Oversee the work of other project managers who are leading sub-components of the overall, primary project work plan
  • Lead the acquisition of related software, products, and services
  • Develop project plans, including project schedule and budget for approval
  • Document and maintain current: project work plan, meetings, decisions, work change orders, project deliverables, progress reports, schedules, cost tracking reports, and other pertinent reports
  • Support “Post-Live” audits of projects to review whether the project met expectations and to identify potential areas for improvement.  Documents results of audit and recommendations
  • Manage special projects, product and/or vendor evaluations
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or information management technology, or equivalent experience
  • 6 years of experience as a project manager
  • Formal project management training, with at least 2 years of experience designing and implementing project management Lifecycle
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with IS staff, clients, executive leadership and vendors
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and available project management software and other supporting tools, and the creative ability to apply them for maximum yield with available resources
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently
  • Ability to lead and direct project teams, meetings, and work sessions
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Deep experience with Agile development methodology.
  • Experience managing project budgets, tracking resources allocations and developing associated metrics
  • Experience establishing Governance processes and meetings for project prioritization
  • Experience implementing 3rd party business applications
  • Experience managing large enterprise projects highly desirable
  • Experience leading but not managing Product Owners and Business Analysts
  • PMP certification a plus
