The University of Massachusetts Medical School is seeking a Night and Weekend Hospitalist with a career interest in Public Sector Psychiatry for a position at Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH).  WRCH, is a state-of-art inpatient and rehabilitation facility that opened in October of 2012. It is a short walk from the Medical School where research and teaching opportunities are easy to accommodate and are actively encouraged.  This public psychiatric hospital is unique with a person-centered, recovery-focus as a fundamental operative principle.

WRCH is a Department of Mental Health Hospital and the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry is contracted to provide the Professional Services. 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; reviewing psychological tests; ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results; and very infrequently doing a physical exam.
  • Enters an admission psychiatric assessment in the electronic medical record
  • Develops initial treatment plans establishing initial treatment goals and interventions
  • Treats patients prn by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications entering orders in hard copy or electronically depending on the situation. Sees patients and writes needed orders for patient put into seclusion or restraint. Conducts follow-up patient debriefing after an episode of seclusion or restraint.
  • Writes progress notes in electronic medical record to reflect each clinical encounter
  • Responds to nursing staff questions about patient management
  • Functions pursuant to hospital policies, procedures, standards, rules, Joint Commission requirements, and legal regulations; and remaining available for emergency consultations.
  • Provides doc-to-doc handoff report at time of change of coverage.
  • Submits patient contact information weekly
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Psychiatry residency in MD or DO program;
  • Valid MA Medical License
  • Board Eligible/Board Certified

Preferred Qualifications

  • Urgent/Emergency medical problem evaluation and management 
  • Psychiatry or primary care, board certified or board eligible, independently licensed physician with valid DEA and MA Controlled Substance Certificate.
