GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the general direction of the Environmental Health & Safety Sr. Director or designee, the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Officer is responsible for the development, management, and implementation of the Environmental Health & Safety Medical School and/or Hospital based programs at the main and offsite campuses. The EH&S Officer is responsible for maintaining the organizations’ compliance with standards and regulations issued by federal, state, municipal, and accreditation agencies.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage all aspects of safety programs in accordance with federal, state and local agencies and accreditation standards.
- Administer hazard assessments, risk assessments, hazard surveillance, and compliance inspections in accordance applicable standards and regulations.
- Create and revise policies, procedures, management plans, and guidelines.
- Lead performance monitoring programs, collecting and analyzing data to identify areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with other EH&S Officers/Managers achieving consistent compliance programs.
- Develop and conduct training programs to improve safe work practices and promote environmental health and safety consciousness.
- Chair or participate in various appropriate committees, subcommittees, or task forces/work groups.
- Direct investigations of accidents and incidents, create reports on findings, and devise appropriate recommendations for improvement.
- Generate safety-related records and reports. Present such reports to Leadership and/or Committees as appropriate.
- Interact with managers and others on environmental health and safety related problems, determines, and implements improvement action(s).
- Perform other duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS degree in safety, chemistry, biology, environmental health and safety fields, or a related field of study.
- 7 years of relevant job experience.
- Certified or become certified within six months of hire, 40 Hour Emergency Chemical Responder per OSHA 1910.120 and NIMS 700 and ICS200.
- Demonstrated comprehensive working knowledge of applicable regulations such as OSHA, EPA, JC, NFPA, NIOSH, FEMA, MEMA, Mass DOS, Mass DEP, Mass DPH, Worcester FD, and Worcester HD.
- Proficient and competent with all Microsoft Office software and database applications.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver safety training sessions. Proficient in writing reports and trending data.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively to complete assigned projects and tasks.
- Respond to matters of urgency after normal working hours. Will participate in pager and/or on-call rotations as necessary.
- Ability to travel to off-site locations
Discipline in Occupational Safety & Health, and The Joint Commission Env. of Care Compliance:
- Advanced knowledge of ergonomics including the seated workstation, materials handling, safe patient handling and laboratory ergonomics.
- Advanced knowledge of injury prevention programs. Ability to conduct job safety analysis, physical demands analysis and accident investigations.
- Advanced knowledge of accident/injury data and databases including analyzing data for trends, and issues.
- Advanced knowledgeable in respiratory protection programs. Ability to perform respiratory fit testing and training.
- Advanced knowledge of OSHA General Industry and Construction standards in particular, industrial hygiene exposure monitoring, monitoring equipment management, indoor air quality, and asbestos assessments.
- Advanced knowledge of Joint Commission Environment of Care accreditation standards.
