GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

The Director, Facilities Operations is responsible for the management oversight of facilities engineering and daily operations and maintenance to support FDA regulated manufacturing operations and associated research and development activities.  The individual is responsible for delivering FDA compliance and excellent customer service in an uninterrupted 24-hour manufacturing environment within a prescribed budget.  This is a performance based position where success is measured through the achievement of organizational and departmental goals.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Coordinates the efforts of Facilities Engineering, Operations and Metrology Managers to support day-to-day and long-term manufacturing and research operations to achieve organizational and departmental goals on schedule and within budget. This includes:
    • Prioritizing Facilities Department activities based on customer needs and manufacturing and research schedules.
    • Supporting process engineering, validation and other activities requiring facilities department resources.
    • Planning and executing facility-wide shutdown activities for major preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Maintains up-to-date department records such as equipment logs, calibration and maintenance records, and facility drawings in support of on-going activities and cGMP and regulatory compliance.
  • Works with Facilities Department managers to develop appropriate management metrics and taking steps to ensure department performance meets acceptable criteria.
  • Reviews and approves department procedures.
  • Approves change controls, planned deviations and incident/deviation reports.
  • Coordinates department activities to ensure timely execution of change controls and prompt incident/deviation root cause analysis and close-out of corrective actions.
  • Provides technical assistance to department personnel.
  • Negotiates vendor contracts both at time of execution and for issues that arise during execution. Approves RFP Criteria; oversees vendor selection.  Ultimate responsibility for vendor contractor performance.Enforces and maintains proper safety measures.
  • Responsible for the development of departmental budget and for Ensuring that all projects are managed in accordance with available budget, resources, and personnel compliant with agreed schedules, “on time and on budget”.
  • Hires, manages and trains staff.  Plans and assigns duties to meet departmental and organizational objectives. Provides guidance and direction to staff; establishing expectations, defining roles, supporting career development and managing performance.
  • Performs additional job related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline with a minimum 10 years of relevant experience including management experience, a Master’s Degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage others, conduct performance review process, set and prioritize departmental goals
  • Prior industry working experience in a cGMP environment within a biotech or pharmaceutical company required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience in any of the following areas preferred:
    • Managing/supervising union personnel
    • Managing contractors
  • May require frequent travel between the Fall River and Mattapan campuses
  • Ability to ensure 24-hour operations which may dictate irregular work schedules based on business needs
  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds
