GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator or designee, the Research Medical Assistant provides patient care by assisting with the implementation of care plans, takes and records vital signs such as blood pressures, temperatures, height, weight, etc., performs EKG’s, assists physician and others with clinical procedures such as urine cultures, pregnancy tests, throat cultures, etc., and draws blood.  The Medical Assistant will also perform a variety of clerical functions to support office functions in the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Clinic

Candidates who prefer 32hours per week are encouraged to apply as well.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assess health status, implement care plans, document interventions, and evaluate patient progress following standard procedures.
  • Coordinate patient flow and prepare patients for examination.  Take and record vital signs and EKG's, screen for recommended vaccines, and perform a visit check in nursing history and system review.  Document intake assessment.  Assist physician and other in clinical procedures as required or directed.  Perform other basic clinical procedures such as venipuncture.  Prepare, document, and administer non-intravenous injections.
  • Perform basic office laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, urine culture, hematocrit, sed rate, monospot, pregnancy tests, throat cultures, and related procedures.  Draw blood. Triage medical calls as per office protocol.  Return patient calls and documents in patient record as required or directed.  Call in prescriptions and refills as directed.  Document prescription calls.
  • Prepare medical notes and reports from local providers for MD’s triage for patient care needs for visit and referrals
  • Patient and family calls/emails/screenings, pre-clinic prep, and assist with patients’ medical forms, reports, letters of medical necessity.
  • Participation in referrals for surgeries and consults.
  • Review laboratory results.  Ensure abnormal results are brought to the attention of the physicians and others as appropriate.
  • Maintain records, reports, logs, and other statistical information.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, making phone calls, after-visit follow up for patients on long-term glucocorticoids.
  • Schedule and coordinate patient visits and medical procedures, both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Issue and verify patients’ managed care referral.
  • Register patients for each patient visit, utilizing computer-based registration/scheduling system.
  • Verify patient’s insurance coverage and eligibility.
  • Collect co-payments from patients for visits, maintains records and makes daily cash deposit.
  • Batch daily encounter forms and relays/submits forms/information to billing office.
  • Maintain assigned office and/or clinical supplies.  Assures accurate inventory of supplies based on approved levels.  Rotates stock as required.  Initiates requisitions for re-supply or special items.  Follow up with personnel outside the medical office to expedite timely action and alleviate or report delays as appropriate.
  • Comply with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
  • Demonstrate use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Educate patients and their families about their conditions in compliance with HIPPA.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of relevant experience
  • Completion of accredited program in Medical Office Assisting (MOA) at an accredited school or equivalent
  • Knowledge of office and laboratory procedures required.

Possiblity of some flexibility on hours such as 32 if perferred
