GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Vice Chancellor of Operations, plans, supervises and participates in functions of the Drugs of Abuse Laboratory, which is responsible for the security and analysis of legal evidence to be submitted to the criminal court.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and establish new methods of drug analysis
  • Manage daily lab activities including interaction with staff, quality control review, procedures, standardization and maintaining and repairing analytical equipment
  • Ensure accuracy and precision of analytical procedures and instrumentation including the validity of data generated.
  • Maintain communication with professional and non-professional staff and appropriate personnel outside the Medical School
  • Manage Laboratory Analysts and Evidence Officers. Responsible for training, continuing education, performance appraisals, hire, fire, and discipline
  • Establish and administer lab budget
  • Prepare reports, and disseminate to appropriate locations
  • Maintain and review lab records
  • Give accurate testimony in court
  • Assist with workload
  • Responsible for evaluation and purchasing of new analytical instrumentation and other materials
  • Ensure that all lab personnel follow all University, laboratory, and drug safety protocols
  • Perform additional duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Natural Science, a related field; or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of experience in laboratory analysis, 1 years of which should be supervisory in nature
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry and its application to drug analysis
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to set up tests and maintain/repair equipment, considerable walking and standing in lab area and near visual acuity for calculating pertinent data and numbers
  • Color vision required for some analytical tests.
