GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

 

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator or designee, the Project Director II manages the day-to-day operations of short term and multi-year research projects. The Project Director II is responsible for the implementation of research projects from inception to completion and manages and coordinates these activities.

The Project Director II is responsible for collaborating with faculty to develop and bring to final submission high-quality, large, multi-disciplinary, and multi-collaborative grant proposals.   The position’s focus is in writing/editing of grant proposals at advanced levels for submission to a variety of funders including the NIH, Department of Defense and other federal and private sources.   The Project Director contributes scientific knowledge and analytical skills to the preparation of grant proposals, including writing drafts of specific aims page, research plan and other sections as needed for proposals, as well as preparation of protocols, progress reports, and regulatory documentation.

This position will work for the Chair, Vice Chair of Research & Faculty in the Department of Medicine. The Project Director II will work on multiple research-funded projects (DARPA, DOD and other funding mechanisms).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Convene and provide overall direction to project teams, which may consist of data staff, research associates, research coordinators and faculty, for the development of project statements, work plans, study designs, grant applications, literature reviews, analysis plans, and project deliverables.
  • Identify necessary resources to perform project work, monitor work progress including, data analysis, grant submissions, and report development, and oversee its timely completion
  • Oversee development of data collection instruments, survey tools and interview guides, perform and oversee data analysis as necessary
  • Abstract results from data analysis sets, summarize findings and incorporate pertinent information into project presentations. Deliver presentation of project results to Principal Investigator and others as required or directed
  • Assume responsibility for communication with relevant staff in creating and implementing appropriate project designs and work plans, convene team meetings as appropriate
  • Manage day-to-day logistics and operational needs of the projects
  • Identify and address problems which may adversely affect performance of project work
  • With the Administrator and/or Accountant, prepare draft budgets
  • Advise and provide supervision of project staff and consultants and faculty associated with specific projects or assignments.  Participation in the hiring and evaluation of project staff
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters’ degree in the Life Sciences, Public Health/Education, or related health care field; or equivalent.
  • 5 years’ experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating research programs, project management, grant submission, supervision of staff, and fiscal responsibility
  • Experience working in and/or with academic institutions and federal grant programs strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with the policies and procedures of funding agencies
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse faculty
  • Proven administrative and management ability in complex environments
  • Excellent writing, editing, communications, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in biomedical sciences, biology, biochemistry
  • Strong science /research background with federal agencies and DARPA, DOD)
  • At least 5 years experience working on biomedical science grant applications and formats
  • Prior work experience at an academic medical center
