GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the general direction of the Associate Controller or designee, the Staff Accountant III prepares financial analyses and monthly account reconciliations and assists with the monthly close and preparation of financial statements for presentation to senior management.  The Staff Accountant III will also be responsible for ensuring complete and accurate financial reporting for the Medical School’s fixed asset portfolio.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare monthly reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts
  • Perform analyses to explain variances in financial results and resolve reconciling items
  • Prepare monthly analysis of capital spend and monitor against approved capital plan
  • Review asset acquisitions and disposals and assess asset impairment to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Partner with Facilities Management to gather and review financial data for capital projects in response to internal and external requests
  • Assist with preparation of the Medical School’s consolidated monthly and annual financial statements
  • Recommend improvements to financial controls and reporting
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate audit work papers and financial analysis for annual external audit
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent 
  • 4 years in financial accounting & reporting, or related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret financial documents such as system reports at both account and summary levels
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing skills needed to present or communicate effectively with all levels of management
  • Ability to work independently according to priority and current projects

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with general ledger functions and reports, PeopleSoft or similar is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar software with advanced MS Excel experience highly preferred
