GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Energy Resources or designee, the Lead High Voltage Electrician is responsible for maintaining all high voltage systems throughout the University of Massachusetts Medical School, power plant, and its off-campus properties.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform all responsibilities of high voltage electrician, such as installs, repairs, modifications and maintenance. Work with high voltage, maintenance electricians and outside contractors at all medical school locations to troubleshoot and repair switchgear and distributions failures
  • Plan and implement maintenance programs for all high voltage switchgear and distribution systems
  • Supervises the installation, operation and repairs of all the high voltage switchgear, electric switches, and other associated devices
  • Interpret electrical & electronic schematics and drawings. Develop and test point to point drawings for high voltage distribution systems
  • Plan for and maintains all electrical metering systems
  • Maintain all high voltage plant electrical generators
  • Supervise electrical contractors in the servicing of high voltage systems and equipment. Work with electrical service contractors to ensure that documentation of high voltage electrical controls and switchgear is accurate
  • Responsible purchasing of supplies and spare parts needed to maintain high voltage systems
  • Responsible for the preparation and development of all service contracts issued for high voltage systems
  • Prepare cost estimates for all work associated with high voltage systems
  • Responsible for assuring work is completed with the least possible disruption to university programs
  • Responsible for developing all high voltage work schedules and notification to customers
  • Perform related duties as required, including assisting other trades in completion of specific projects
  • Responsible for obtaining permits associated with project work
  • While in the performance of routine duties, may be required as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification, where the work or task does not require a specific license
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Trade School diploma, or equivalent experience
  • Must possess current Massachusetts Journeyman’s Electrical License.
  • 5 years of experience with high voltage electrical generators in a power plant
  • Demonstrated experience with high-pressure boilers and chillers
  • Though knowledge of hazards and safety precautions peculiar to the trade.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS: 

May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock; may work in confined spaces on ladders. Ability to perform physically arduous tasks; normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas
