GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Director of the Department of Animal Medicine, the Associate Director of Veterinary Services is responsible for assuring that adequate veterinary care and veterinary technical services are provided to research animals and investigators.  In addition, the Associate Director of Veterinary Services is also responsible for the general management and leadership of the Veterinary Services division.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Director, Department of Animal Medicine, in departmental management.
  • Provide leadership to, and management of, the division of Veterinary Services.
  • Assure the implementation of the program of veterinary preventive medicine.
  • Assure the provision of adequate clinical veterinary care and veterinary technical services for research animals and investigators.
  • Develop and oversee the annual operating budget for Veterinary Services.
  • Supervision of direct reports including hiring, dismissing, and disciplinary actions for direct reports and others (if required) in Veterinary Services.
  • Assure Veterinary Services compliance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations and policies.
  • Review applications submitted to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).   Serve on or advise UMMS committees and faculty as needed.
  • Assist in laboratory animal science training/education of UMMS employees/students.
  • Assure the development and implementation of internships for veterinary medical and veterinary technical school students.
  • Participate in emergency on-call.
  • Advance the mission of the UMMS and the department through clinical or basic research, and/or publications in professional journals, and/or presentations at professional and other meetings.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • DVM.
  • Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or equivalent international certification.
  • Successful completion of the national Clinical Competency examination (or equivalent international examination).
  • 8 years of applicable veterinary medical experience with laboratory animals, including experience with a wide variety of common laboratory animal species.
  • Record of progressive administrative and managerial responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and amicably with personnel at varying levels of education and experience.
  • Computer literate, particularly in word processing and electronic mail.
