GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Director of Finance and Controller for Commonwealth Medicine (CWM) or designee, this position will work collaboratively with managers in the areas of budget, financial reporting and analysis, procurement and contracting, and other areas to actively analyze financial information and assist in developing financial reporting tools.  This position will also review existing policies and procedures, ensuring operations run efficiently and effectively.  The incumbent will be expected to support the Director of Finance and Controller for CWM in evaluating current reporting capabilities and work in concert with other departments to provide insight regarding data collection processes and analysis to further enhance reporting capabilities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Collaborate with Finance staff of all UMMS Business Units, as well as with internal and external stakeholders supporting the financial operations of UMMS.
  • Create and maintain monthly reporting around costs, performance, productivity and quality for Commonwealth Medicine (“CWM”).
  • Interpret operating results as they affect the financial performance and strategic plan, and make specific recommendations which will result in cost reductions and profit improvement.
  • Analyzes financial information through the use of queries, spreadsheets, databases and other reporting tools for trend analyses, forecasts and financial ratios in conjunction with the budget office and other university entities.
  • Proactively analyzes and interprets key performance metrics, and statistical, financial and accounting information. Identifies and communicates trends, patterns and events that may be of interest or concern to leadership for CWM.
  • Supervise the CWM Budget Supervisor and Senior Contracts Analyst (hiring, training, performance management, evaluation and mentoring).
  • Review current policies and practices related to the CWM Budget process and collaborate with the UMMS budget team to develop an annual formalized budget process
  • Assist in the annual CWM budget process and serve as the liaison with the business units for budget development and use of budget systems (Adaptive)
  • Maintain a tool to monitor negative budget variances and work with program managers to develop and implement corrective action plans
  • Participate in the long range financial planning processes, acting as financial liaison providing analyses and information to management in support of these processes.
  • Partner with procurement and contracting to compile and distribute monthly data regarding business unit performance and potential areas for efficiencies
  • Keep current on new reporting requirements and regulations by studying relevant journals and attending professional seminars.  Provide technical expertise on any emerging accounting and financial reporting requirements and regulations. 
  • Ability and/or commitment to working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds in an inclusive, welcoming environment. Ability to effectively work and communicate with individuals from varied cultural backgrounds.

  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • MBA or professional designation such as a CPA or CMA
  • 7-10 years’ experience of progressively responsible experience in an accounting or finance environment
  • 5 years of management experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing skills.
  • Ability to present and communicate effectively with all levels of management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • CPA preferred
  • Previous experience in an academic, health care, or public sector setting.
