The Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School was established in 1989, and its faculty represents a diverse group of investigators, basic scientists and clinical researchers, whose research focuses on human disease processes.

Dr. Jason Kim, Professor of Molecular Medicine and Professor of Medicine – Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, is a leading investigator in obesity, metabolism, and type 2 diabetes, and his NIH-funded research program has made a significant contribution to the field with high-impact scientific publications. Dr. Kim is also the Program Director of National Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center at UMass (www.mmpc.org), and he has engaged in numerous collaborative projects with academic and industry scientists all around the world.

The goal of our research program is to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which obesity causes type 2 diabetes and its complications using transgenic mouse models. Current projects focus on the role of inflammation, macrophages, cytokine signaling, and gut microbes in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. We employ a comprehensive approach using state-of-the-art instruments, elegant in vivo metabolic procedures, genomic and molecular biology tools, biochemical analysis, cell-based studies, and mouse models with highly translational findings for the ultimate purpose of finding a cure for diabetes.

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for a Post-Doctoral Associate position that will be funded through an NIH grant.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. and/or M.D. required. Applicants must have significant experience with molecular biology and cell biology techniques. Experience with next-generation sequencing technology, cell-based analysis, and small animal experimentation (preferably using mice) will be advantageous. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in molecular methods, desire to build expertise in animal physiology and metabolism, and desirable characters including highly motivated, well organized, reliable, ethical, and excellent interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate must exhibit speaking and writing proficiency with the emphasis on writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Desire to build research expertise in mouse metabolism, physiology, obesity and diabetes.
