 GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the supervision of the Sustainability and Energy Manager, the Sustainability Intern is responsible for helping to implement and maintain sustainability programs for the UMass Medical School (UMMS) and UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC); and, to assist UMMS in meeting voluntary and mandated sustainability targets.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help to identify potential areas to improve sustainability and recommend appropriate solutions
  • Assist with the implementation of waste and energy reduction initiatives
  • Perform data entry into voluntary reporting platforms including Energy Star Portfolio Manager, EPA Re-trac for WasteWise, Campus Carbon Calculator, and review and analyze data for trends, deficiencies, and quality control
  • Help maintain records and documentation to track key performance indicators, including meter readings, recycling report reports, and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Assist in collection and reporting of the sustainability policy performance metrics as part of the Annual Sustainability Report
  • Conduct recycling audits to evaluate UMMS and UMMHC recycling programs
  • Work with sustainability communications consultant to assist in the development of recycling awareness campaign
  • Enhance sustainability communication and outreach though better utilization of social media and website
  • Interact with members of the Hospital and School community to promote sustainability
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates pursuing bachelor’s degree or recent graduates
  • Related experience preferred
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Ability to use standard office tools and software (MS-Office)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Pursuing degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related degree. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software and database applications
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and the ability to travel to off-site locations 
  • Good oral and written communication skills
