We are seeking a Manager of Hosted Systems to join our growing team that is looking for a challenging and fast paced environment comprising of 1000+ servers running on Standalone and Virtual infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be well versed in a mix of technologies with an emphasis and motivation to take charge in supporting and maintaining our servers’ infrastructures, key associated services (AD, DNS, Exchange, Secure file transfer, etc.) and supporting staffs.

 

The Manager of Hosted Systems will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the UMASS medical school Servers Infrastructure which operates on a 24x7x365 basis. The ideal candidate will possess the understanding of a hosted datacenter as he/she will be responsible for the customer facing production environment monitoring, performance, release/deployment, security, reliability, availability, capacity and latency.

 

The candidate will manage the sustained engineering and maintenance for server systems across all practices of UMASS Medical School including UNIX and Wintel environments. Establishes short and long-range goals to ensure servers’ capacity meets future requirements, including the development of methodologies and strategies for systems analysis, installation and support. He/she will develop and implements standards, policies, and procedures necessary to ensure the viability and integrity of the server infrastructure. Directs workflow, resolves technical problems and ensures general operations conform to established standards. The ideal candidate must have strong Windows server and Active directory skills as well as experience managing VMware ESX/vSphere and Virtual Center shared environments.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support our storage / backup modernization and consolidation with a goal to reduce cost and increase efficiency
  • Assist in facilitating discussions with customers around Operational Recovery and Disaster Recovery
  • Ensures availability and stability of systems leveraging our monitoring infrastructure
  • Manage, identify, and proactively anticipates systemic and technical issues
  • Assist customers with migrations to next generation backup solutions
  • Oversee that the service incidents and requests are being addressed and resolved in a timely manner. Primarily responsible for ensuring the established reliability and performance level standards set forth by IT Service Level Agreements for the server infrastructure. Monitor quality of service through data collection and analysis with the intent on quality assurance and improvement. Work with outside vendors to assure proper coverage of /compliance with technical support agreements.
  • Oversee a maintenance schedule of applicable software and hardware upgrades that provide a server infrastructure that is secure and delivers reliability and performance level standards set forth by IT Service Level Agreements. This includes the management of server lifecycle, vendor support and procurement of replacement systems by working with vendors any required department or process to secure supplies and equipment necessary to operations.
  • Develop and ensure appropriate utility operation and preventative maintenance programs are in place to maximize equipment reliability, minimize downtime and repair costs
  • Responsible for the security of the infrastructure through the management of security and intrusion prevention methodologies as outlined by IT Information Security policy
  • Oversee operation strategy, process and execution to deliver optimal performance and availability. Ensures that all systems, application and network connections are at 100% availability to the organization as needed
  • Responsible for management and execution of standard operating processes and the installation of IT Infrastructure
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage all activities and personnel. Manage assigned group of staff. Carryout management responsibilities within areas of responsibility in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Provide direction and support to staff to assure departmental effectiveness and efficiency
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, selecting, orienting and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; reviewing personnel actions of subordinates and addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Define and implement policies, procedures, and best practices. Manage overall operational policies and procedures, process improvement initiatives and change control.
  • Implement and manage metrics and operational performance reporting
  • Develop a highly accountable operation team
  • Under minimal direction, manage the resolution of any technical issues that may arise to an acceptable return to service by calling on all required internal and external resources in a timely manner while communicating to business owners and management in accordance with IT policy and procedure
  • Monitor projects to ensure completion on schedule and within budget
  • Interact with other managers on matters requiring coordination across organizational lines
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 7 Years minimum work experience in an Information Technology supporting multiple platforms
  • Demonstrated management skills and 2 years minimum in a successful supervisory role
  • Strong, hands-on operations background with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of proactive monitoring and operations
  • Experience in infrastructure capacity planning based on key attributes Flexible, continuous learner, excellent communicator, works well in team environment, appreciates challenge, comfortable and effective working in new areas that require experimentation and rapid problem solving
  • Must possess sound judgment with the ability to work and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work autonomously and address issues that arise day-or-night
  • Experience facilitating meetings w/multiple customers and technical staff, including building consensus and mediating compromises when necessary
  • Ability to excel in idea generation, evaluation, and prioritization, customer and partner engagement, and cross-functional technical program management.
  • Ability to work w/technical and non-technical resources to get things done
  • Strong, project management skills, time management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to travel to off-site locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Responsible for the customer facing production environment monitoring, performance, release/deployment, security, reliability, availability, capacity, latency, and other non-functional concerns
  • Strong foundation in Virtualization software like VMware, KVM and Service Management
  • Deep understanding of scaling out and horizontal scaling infrastructure architectures
  • Experience in infrastructure capacity planning based on key attributes
  • Excellent skills in building productive working relationships within internal IT functional areas and with internal customers of IT services
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse, high performing organization and maintaining high standards for professional behavior and quality work products
  • Experience in fast turnaround IT solutions and deployments to meet changing business demands and enables pursuit of strategic business opportunities
